A stretch of hot, dry summer weather settles over Kiowa County to open the weekend, with sunny skies and a high near 99 in Eads Friday before temperatures push past the century mark — near 100 Saturday and 103 Sunday — according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
Friday brings sunny skies and light winds, with west-northwest breezes of 5 to 10 mph turning northeast in the afternoon. Friday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 66 and northeast winds becoming light and variable after midnight.
The eastern plains will remain "dry and hot, with high temps increasing above 100 degrees" through the weekend as an upper-level high pressure system settles over the Four Corners region, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion. Monsoon moisture will keep afternoon showers and thunderstorms going over the mountains, where flash flooding remains a concern on burn scars, but a more stable air mass is expected to keep the plains largely dry into next week.
Heat peaks Sunday and Monday
Sunday is forecast to be the hottest day of the stretch in Eads, with a high near 103, followed closely by Monday at 102. No heat advisories or other weather warnings are in effect for Kiowa County, but several consecutive days at or above 100 degrees can take a toll, particularly on people working outdoors, young children and older adults.
