Lamar and Prowers County face the hottest stretch of the region this week, with sunny skies, breezy winds and highs near 99 Monday and Tuesday, climbing to around 100 on Wednesday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo expects thunderstorm chances to increase midweek as moisture builds, offering a brief break before hot, dry conditions return.

Monday is sunny and breezy, with a high near 99. A south-southeast wind of 5 to 10 mph increases to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Monday night is mostly clear with a low around 65 and a breezy southeast wind of 15 to 20 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion that "a slow increase in available moisture brings an increase in daily shower and thunderstorm coverage through the middle of the week," with a much warmer and drier pattern setting up for the weekend.

Heat and wind raise fire concern

With highs near or above 100 and afternoon wind gusts to 35 mph early in the week, fire weather conditions across the lower Arkansas River Valley will be elevated even though no formal Red Flag Warning has been issued for Prowers County. Dry vegetation, low afternoon humidity and gusty winds mean any spark could spread quickly, and residents are urged to use caution with equipment and open flames. Storm chances build Tuesday night and midweek, with slow-moving storms capable of gusty winds, lightning and brief heavy rain.

Tuesday and Wednesday

Tuesday is sunny and breezy, with a high near 99 and a south-southeast wind of 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph. A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms arrives Tuesday night. Wednesday is the hottest day, sunny with a high near 100, and a 40 percent chance of evening storms follows Wednesday night as the low falls to around 63.

Extended outlook: Thursday and Friday

Thursday stays hot and mostly sunny with a high near 98 and a 40 percent chance of afternoon storms, with showers becoming likely Thursday night. Friday turns cooler and mostly sunny with a high near 93 and only a slight chance of an afternoon storm. Looking beyond the week, forecasters expect high pressure to rebuild across the Four Corners, returning well-above-normal heat and lowering rain chances.

Given the extreme heat and gusty winds early in the week, residents should stay hydrated, limit strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and exercise care with anything that could spark a fire.
