Sandy Dexter to Talk About Amache Ochinee Prowers
The next Bent's Fort Chapter meeting will be held on Saturday, November 12, at the JW Rawlings Heritage Center and Museum located at 560 Bent Ave., Las Animas, CO. The Chapter meeting will start at 11 AM followed by a potluck.
At 1 PM Sandy Dexter will present a talk titled "Walking Woman” about Amache Ochinee Prowers who was the Cheyenne wife of John Wesley Prowers. In her talk Sandy will share what she has learned from researching Amache's life, especially her life after the death of John Prowers. It is a fascinating story.
Sandy Dexter is a retired registered nurse and nationally published author, whose forte is history. Her prior works include a short booklet titled "Tom Mix: the Canon City Years" and a short historical novel "Owl Woman: Her Life with William Bent." She also is the scriptwriter for two national award winning documentary videos that have aired on PBS. She divides her time between her homes in Canon City and Denver, CO which she shares with her husband, documentary filmmaker and educator, Don Dexter, Phd.
The public is invited to attend the talk beginning at 1 PM. There is no charge to attend. The Bent’s Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to protect and preserve the Santa Fe Trail and to promote awareness of the historical legacy associated with it.
