Home Country

By Slim Randles

Doc wasn’t really sure just why he woke up so early this morning and went outside. It was cold, of course, as the first day of any new year is supposed to be. He and Mrs. Doc had watched some television of the parties taking place around the world, but then, about 11, he began thinking of the mystery he was reading, and how comforting and nice it is to lie in bed and read each night as part of a years-old routine.

So he went to bed and read. Mrs. Doc came in a few minutes later.

Photo of the Week

One of our most popular features over the past 15 years - a full-page color photo on the front of the Kiowa County Press showing various impressions of life in Kiowa County. While a limited number of copies continue to be printed and distributed each week at Kiowa Healthmart, COOP C-Store in Eads, Haswell Propane, and Thunderbird Petroleum, we wanted to bring this feature to our online readers as well.

Recipe - Liz’s Sparkling New Year’s Cider

Makes: 6 Servings

With two little ones in the house, I’m always looking for ways that I can introduce them to new flavors and textures of foods and beverages. This sparkling cider recipe does just that! The 100% apple juice is familiar and adds a touch of sweetness, while the cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon introduce them to new spices. The bubbles from the sparkling water also provide a fun new feeling for their mouth. Adults will enjoy this beverage too! ~Liz, CNPP Nutritionist

Ingredients

2 cups 100% apple juice

1⁄2 teaspoon star anise

Good Wood Club Event Benefits Lamar Community College

The Good Wood Club (GWC), a charitable organization in Denver, recently hosted its 5th Annual Holiday Luncheon, the proceeds from which were given to Lamar Community College via the Quarterly Forum (QF) Scholarship Programs. Dr. Linda Lujan, president of Lamar Community College, and Dr. Nancy McCallin, president of the Colorado Community College System, were both in attendance as guests of QF.

Last spring, the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) and QF partnered to provide $150,000 in scholarships for Lamar Community College students.
