“Walk by faith not by sight.” II Corinthians 5:7

Chase Stolzenberger of Eads was elected the President of the District IV 4-H Council, and Alexa Nelson of Haswell was elected to be Secretary at a Council meeting at the Pueblo Zoo. Their county extension agent, Tearle Lessenden, accompanied them to the event.

Eunice Weber, the much-loved ambulance coordinator-educator and regular night employee of Prairie Pines Assisted Living Center, was honored with a surprise 70th birthday party at the Eads senior citizens’ center. Her friends and fellow employees decorated the center beautifully in numerous balloons and banners. There was an abundant taco bar, boxes of soda pop, and a pretty cake. Eunice told me that I had typed the wrong message, that she was not retiring. “No,” she told me, “there is no way,
she is going to retire yet. There is much to be done. I want, we want, the good ambulance service to continue in the transition from the hospital to the Kiowa County Commissioners being the overseers. She needs a new office building. It appears quite obvious where she should get to move and to teach her life-saving skills.

Teresa Witte told me that her daughter, Eboni Nash, will soon be graduating from Harvard University. Eboni has a good job in Denver already.

Over the weekend, there was a big two-day horse show at the Kiowa County fairgrounds with what looked like hundreds of horses and trailers with youth competing.

Dusty Eikenberg of Haswell, who is a gardener and a teacher in Lamar, sold lovely basket flower arrangements for Mother’s Day. He has many plants already growing for his summer farmer’s market.

Jack and Honeybelle Dixon and family attended the wedding of their son, Jack, to Ali in Pueblo, May 1.

Chelsey Crosby of Eads has been studying to be a registered nurse at Otero Junior College, where her pinning ceremony was May 1. Her mentor, Jodi Stolzenberger, and husband, Darrell Stolzenberger, hosted a lovely meal and party in Eads to honor her that evening.

David and Denille Splitter of Sheridan Lake were in Montana recently to attend the closing service at the Bible College where their children, Benjamin and Lydia, attended this year.

The Bud and Dixie Bennett flags are waving on Maine Street this spring. Three doors down, Charlie Vasquez often has his flag waving at the Maine Scoop, where he offers noon meals.

Daily at midday at the roadside park in Eads, one can buy Russ Watson’s Smokin’ Bar-B-Que dinners or individual entrées. We are blessed with good eating places in Eads. Robin Musgrave took me for noon birthday lunch at the Cobblestone Inn. I like their pizzas and she likes their hamburgers.

Brandy Turcotte, who is the director of the Prairie Pines Assisted Living Center, brought a resident, Mina Debusk, to the brunch at the Eads senior citizens center. Both ladies marveled to see how pretty the center is. Brandy visited at the individual tables with the diners. We had so many delicious brunch foods that Gail Voss, Loretta Siebel, Madonna Pollreis and Alice Glover had to keep rearranging food bowls. We plan to have “coffee hour” Monday afternoons at 2:00 p.m. We will be setting other dates for playing cards events at the business meeting meal day May 21.

The Kiowa County Hospital District Health Fair was successful. Gloria Trosper with Shannon Dixon are the lead organizers of this really wonderful opportunity. It is a great service to have your blood drawn and other tests for which you can later discuss with a doctor of your choice. I was pleased to visit with Madison Kelley, who is a student and intern at Otero Junior College. She has learned to draw blood and will train to be a lab technician. Gloria said there were 22 volunteers who assisted with the health fair. There were several teachers from the Eads Education Association who had a food bar to earn funds for Future Teacher scholarships. Connie Richardson told me their 12-point EKG test is free. They give you the results and you can talk the doctor of your choice for interpretation of your heart health. Chiropractor Dr. Meredith (Koch) Cordova set her adjustment table in the kindergarten room. We hear there are 30 students in preschool now. Bless Mrs. Gaye Uhland with that task next year. She does a great job every year teaching kindergarten students!

The Eads Baccalaureate Service will be at the First Baptist Church Sunday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. for our 14 graduates.

The highlight of this week for many was the athletic-academics award banquet. I will tell you of more awards next week. One of the first awards was to Ross Brown for his Eads history making hole-in-one at the Eads golf tournament. Coach Justin McLoud awarded him an impressive glass-looking trophy! Mrs. Mary Vasquez introduced for installation the 2021 Student Council Officers: President, Rhaelie Rittgers; Vice President, Cade McDowell; Secretary, Brianna Wilson; and Reporter, Kadan Dunlap.

There was a huge crowd at the Eads verses County Line Rivals (Wiley-McClave) baseball game Saturday night. Brandon Lening was named “Golden Plains MVP Player” of the game by the radio sports announcer. He observed that Brandon was a terrific pitcher. Hatch Nelson hit a home run ball that brought in three players. What an exciting game under the lights!
