“Love one another as I have loved you.” John 13: 34

Baccalaureate service was held last week at the Eads First Baptist Church with Pastors Ken Grant, Mark Imel, Ernie Lambright, Deborah Gooden, and Haswell Lay-leader Pamela Lessenden leading the worship. Pianists was Annetta Maxcy and vocalists were Mary Eikner and Slyvia Weeks. Youth who assisted were greeters, Caleb Andrew Grant and Gabe Hadley; Acolyte, Catherine Trosper; ushers Brently Lening and Case Nelson; and flower girls, Aspen Nelson and Addison Courkamp. The church family hosted a cookie reception following the service for the Eads senior class. These seniors graduate this Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

People who had donated to the after-prom party were pleased to receive a purple thank you card, which was signed by each of the 14 members of the Eads class of 2021 students, and a wonderful photo of them in their formal prom attire. We appreciate their fine manners.

The senior citizens’ center in Eads was filled with many men and women for the monthly noon dinner and business meeting. Debi Derby presented her designs and ideas for a memorial board. Cindy McLoud was heartily thanked for the new letters she made for our outdoor sign, and her husband, Mike, and mother, Joyce, were thanked for directing and anchoring the ladder for Cindy. Two young ladies who are employed by the National Park Service introduced themselves as our neighbors and told us about the volunteer opportunities with the NPS. Director Gail Voss was highly complimented for cooking all those chicken fried steaks and gravy to go with Joyce Berry and Sylvia Weeks’ mashed potatoes.

Some people from Eads who have close connections with the Haswell community went to their Mexican-theme meal that night. Our thoughts and prayers are with Gloria Peck of Eads who has been a part of both of our groups and is suffering now from an illness.

Our sympathy is extended to the families of Paula McMains of Eads who died this month; especially to her daughter, Traci (Steve) Uhland, and her granddaughter, Alexis (Hunter) Uhland, of this county. Paula has lived in Unity Village for several years.

Remember that the Eads Chamber of Commerce meeting is at noon June 2 at JJ’s Restaurant.

Brooke Crawford, granddaughter of Gail and LaDonna Crawford of Eads, was hosted with a lovely bridal shower at the Kit Carson Trinity Lutheran Church last Sunday. She will be married to Kyle Breth in McCook, Nebraska, July 17.

Aiden Michael graduated from Wiley High School Sunday May 16. His grandparents, Gail Voss and Larry Michael, and others from friends from the Eads-Haswell communities attended his festivities.

While I was waiting in the Haswell Propane and Antique Shop for Paul Stoker to put new tires on my van, it was so interesting to visit with people who came and went. Many were buying beverages and foods, while others were there for a rest from their work. I had a nice visit with Commissioner Donald Oswald. The next day, we were pleased to have Commissioners Butch Robertson and Commissioner Mike and Debbie Lening at our senior dinner. It has been so many years since I saw Paul Stavely that I didn’t recognize the silver curly haired man!

The duck race in a parking lot stream was so delightful for the residents and employees during Hospital Week, that they plan to do that again soon. After over a year of not being able to facilitate Bible studies at the nursing home and Prairie Pines, I am really enjoying the chance to visit with the precious residents. It has been such a long time for them too. I do encourage you, readers, wherever you live, to take the time to visit people who have been isolated for so long!

I read in Pages from the Past in the Kiowa County Press that “Marty Miller hurled a no-hitter baseball game against Plainview School 50 years ago!” When I told this fact to Bob Miller and the other men sitting at the Prairie Pines lunch table, Jimmy Bendorf replied, “Oh, I remember those days of competition between the schools.” We are glad that the students and people enjoy each other now. Some locals who know Kiowa County history may remember that those ill feelings probably began when some men from Eads stole the county records from Sheridan Lake. They brought the records on a train at night to Eads to establish Eads as the county seat. My country neighbor, Lida Link, told me details about that. Her brother was one of the men who “did the deed.”

Best Wishes to Marty Miller and Krissy Ray of Eads who were married in Las Vegas, Nevada, last month with their four children and some family there to celebrate with them.

Rebecca Ann Abrams of Eads and Thomas Daniel Specht of Sheridan Lake were hosted with a bridal shower at the Splitter Farms. The young couple was married May 24 at the Hitt Home in Colorado Springs.

Mrs. Gaye Uhland’s Eads Kindergarten class marched from the Christian Church on north Maine to south Maine Friday evening. The Plains Theatre marquee message had on its “Congratulations Kindergarten Class of 2033.” Last week it was great to see different school buses parked on Maine while the students attended a movie. Tuesday morning, we saw four McClave buses parked on the street.

Maranatha, Friends.
