Comfort — where I live now, we are called to comfort others often. Sometimes a person just needs a little pat; others respond to a hug or kind words or encouraging words. Sometimes encouragement or comfort comes via a hand motion, a kind note or comment, or a quiet helping hand. Sometimes a ‘knowing smile’ even makes a person smile and feel better…

Gwen Cook, formerly of Wiley, was feted with a birthday party Sunday afternoon. Gwen was happy to have her two daughters and their husbands from Elizabeth and Wiley come and bring their five teenage children.

Last Tuesday construction of the Weisbrod Clinic lot began with lots of loud noises as a company of five or six men worked with a huge loader, a big road-grader-type machine, and a deep digger machine, taking out the cement on the west side and digging for a new water line. It was fascinating to watch and listen to, but it was also dusty because of our very dry conditions in Eads. It was sad too because I closed my eyes for a short time, and when I opened them to look across the street, I saw that suddenly two lovely trees had been cut down and carried away, and they were struggling to uproot the roots! The big hole for the new clinic is dug, so the long process of waiting seems to be over. I can assure you that the parking lot and side streets fill up with vehicles coming from many places here on the plains, and sometimes I even talk to people who come from big cities because they like our “providers,” as they often call them, because people like a certain doctor, therapist, technician, or specialist who is contracted to come to the Eads Clinic. Oh, it will be a vast improvement for those of us who know that a chiropractic adjustment is just what they need. We are so blessed because Sean Oquist comes once a week Wednesday. Currently, Dr. Oquist works in the clinic just north of Weisbrod Hospital that was built before 1950.

Brenda Leon, our activity director, took several ladies out to fish at Jackson’s Pond. The ladies had a good time. One little lady who is usually so quiet threw her fishing line into the pond and caught a fish! She was so happy! And it happened the next time she tossed out her line. She was delighted, and she was the “star” of the day. What fun Brenda has planned for us if we want to participate. This week some other residents get a chance to go out to the pond.

Another wonderful thing that is happening out at Jackson’s Pond is that a group of men who come to the Senior Center were visiting and decided to see what they could volunteer to do to clean up the place close to town. I was so impressed! They have picked up a lot of trash and carried it away, mowed some areas, and repaired some picnic tables. I will try to write their names down soon; since many of them are newer to the community, I don’t know the spelling of their names. But they are top-notch people! Thank you, kind men!

We who go out Wednesday mornings to “Rock and Roll” so enjoy seeing the storefronts and people out on the streets. We admire those green and well-kept yards and flowerpots by storefronts. Sometimes we go to schools, and that is interesting too. Next month we will be able to see some young children and teenagers. It is even more enjoyable these days because more of the youth know us since Brenda Leon has arranged for us to go to more school events or have more children come here to visit.

The last Maine Street Bash of the summer begins this Friday, July 31, at 6:00 p.m. How nice that they are having a free movie for children under the age of 12, as also happened two weeks ago. These movies are sponsored by several benevolent groups who care for kids. The music will be sung by Brady Nichols of Scott City, Kansas, who is a rising star as a country western singer. According to details about the young man, he also often sings with a back-up group of three musicians called the High Plains Drifters. However, at the Bash on July 31, Nichols will be singing solo. He is known not only for his country western style but also for his Texas honky-tonk and other styles of singing. The general thought by those of the community and visitors is that this has been a great summer to look forward to going to five summer Bashes. We really do like having a great weekend of entertainment and visiting as well as seeing many friends and family on lovely summer evenings. Thank you to all the volunteers who have done so much to bring summer entertainment to hundreds of folks. So do join us — you can sit on the stone wall or the grass if there isn’t a picnic bench available; bringing a folding chair is a good idea. You can visit the beer garden or one of several food vendors or tables around Horseshoe Park.

One of the highlights of last weekend was to have Molly Stolzenberger Rosler of Limon and her mother, Jodi, bring her baby daughter, Laklyn, up for us to see at Weisbrod. Her husband, Jonathan, was home with Molly’s father, Darrell.
