Gloria Peck brought her State Fair and Kiowa County Fair blue ribbon quilt to hang on the quilt rack in the Weisbrod ECU. It is really dramatic with black and brown bucking broncos in the quilted blocks. Last month Madonna W. Pollreis displayed a delicate hand sewn white baby baptismal dress made by Phillip’s grandmother, Matilda Harwig on the display rack.
At this writing, my heart is sad for the remaining families of my former neighbor and friend, Connie Howerton McPherson since she passed Sunday morning the 4th. Connie worked in and managed the Kiowa County Press over the course of about 40 years. She was a very quiet, keep to herself person, but one on one, she was a pleasant friend. For over a year I was concerned by her loss of weight, and now cancer has taken her from us. It is a good thing that her daughter, Bobbi and Josh Scott, and their five children could take her into their home in Kansas City this past year. What a blessing children can be.
Another dear lady passed Saturday, my good friend, Suzanne Proctor’s mother Jeannie, age 91 succumbed to the ravages of arthritis that has afflicted her for 20 some years.
Tim Pitman was married to Haley in Oakley, Kansas, last week. He is the son of Cindy Pitman and the grandson of Cleta Engelhardt of Haswell.
One of the nice traditions that the State of Colorado does is to honor families who have maintained their own farm or ranch for 100 years or more. This year Allen and Luanna Naugle of Wild Horse, CO, were thrilled that their three children, Ryan, Kristi, and Jeremy with them at the ceremonies to receive the award for the Sanders-Naugle Ranch. The Naugles were also the Marshals of the Cheyenne County Fair Parade last month.
Janet (Peterson) and her husband, Virgil Kochis, of Simla also were honored for their family farm has been in the Kochis family for one hundred years. Their son and daughter and infant son were with them for the ceremonies at the State Fair. Janet was an outstanding 4-H’er in Kiowa County before attending CSU. She has been the traveling Dietician who comes to Weisbrod Hospital for many years at least once a month to confer with the staff about menus and resident’s nutritional needs.
Corbin Jagers of McClave, formerly of Eads, was interviewed on TV News last week. This ten year old 4-H’er certainly spoke with ease. Corbin’s name means, “Gift”, and we agree, he is a gift to his family and others.
The County Fair began Wednesday afternoon with exhibit entries to be brought in to the fair grounds and the Goat Show. The fair ends on Sunday with a Cowboy Church service at 9:00 a.m. Through out the day there are a number of fun kid’s activities.
Sunday afternoon the movie, “Ben Hur” will be shown. The Ministerial Fellowship will man the concession stand and take tickets. The movie is a new version of “Ben Hur” and how his life was affected by the Lord Jesus’ death on the cross.
Jack Dixon’s sister –in-law, the former Dottie Thrasher, and her husband visited Jack Dixon Saturday morning. Dottie said that Jack has had his third cast, so they are hoping that his leg will now heal correctly.
Three lady’s birthdays were celebrated at the Prairie Pines retirement Center afternoon Tea Time Friday afternoon. The celebrations were for Evelyn Garner, Winifred Obert, and Phyllis Batterton. Phyllis’ daughters brought a cake on Tuesday and her sons Brent and Blaine, brought a large decorated cake on Friday for the party. Madonna Pollreis showed the ladies and gentlemen the attractive denim jacket she made and decorated for Pricilla Waggoner from her brother, Dr. Jeff Waggoner’s jeans.
At Kit Carson Day, Polly Collins Johnson and Lauretta Price Blankenbaker were congratulated because Saturday was the 83rd birthday for both ladies. They were Kit Carson school mates also.
The 2015-2016 Eads High Yearbook is on sale at the school for $35.00. It is great to see. The Eagle motif cover was designed by sophomore Madison Kelley. Madison is a junior this year, a cheerleader, sportswoman, and good student.
We were pleased to see Johnny Jacobs –Marines, and Areta Blooding Laird-Navy with the VFW, Veterans of Foreign Wars group, in the Kit Carson Day Parade last Saturday.
I have been reading about Amendment 69 that is on the ballot and how it can be so devastating for all Coloradoans. It can be especially bad for the finances or lack of finances of Senior Citizens and those on Social Security or Pensions. Please be informed about this danger before you vote on the November 8th ballot.
See you at the Fair.
