About Town - August 16, 2021
“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not be in want.” Psalm 23:1
The schools in Eads were the first to begin in eastern Colorado last week. We have fine educators and students whom we expect to get good educations. It has been a pleasure to see first day of school photos posted by parents. Parents are key to the success of their children.
Golf is in full swing. Brentley Lening won 17th place in that big tournament in Fowler. If fans travel to Springfield August 20, they can see the middle school and high school students play volleyball.
After 65 ½ years of marriage, Phil and Madonna Pollreis have discovered that they have a ton of treasurers and lots of stuff which they are selling from their house or giving away. One can check out their yard sales, August 20-21 but can drop in most any time to buy or donate for what you want. The moving truck will take the rest of their belongings to Denver August 28, where they plan to make their home with their daughter, Dawn, and Chuck Bellveal. Their friends are treasuring every opportunity to get to visit with them before they leave us. Tears come easily for me at these times.
Every Monday at 2:00 p.m. people can come to the coffee hour at the senior center in Eads. It was a special time last week to gather around the large table to enjoy a beverage and treat. George Ellicott sent some pretty orange-gold gladiolas for us to enjoy as we sipped our beverages by Gail Voss.
Richard Ritchie has mailed information from Schaumberg, Illinois, about the class of 1961’s reunion. Kas (Fischer) Stewart has sent details from Oklahoma City and indicated that Brenda (Addington) Stoker is the local liaison for questions for their class and the class 1966. They plan to go to the two Chamber of Commerce breakfasts by the bank, sit in the middle section to watch the rodeos, and have several other gatherings during the fair. I remember that those students knew how to have fun.
Our most sincere sympathy is extended to Julie (Addington) Larrew whose husband, Gary Larrew, died after a long illness. His burial is planned for Fort Collins where the family lived.
Alice Glover met Mollie Kelley at GNBank to give her the Billy Glover Scholarship money. Alice is also giving scholarship money to Hatch Nelson and to JaNae Voss from the fund set up by a kind man who was involved in an accident that caused Bill’s death on a road with poor signage. All these years since, the man has sent money for the scholarship that Alice’s children chose after reading the applications.
Friday was Employee Appreciation Day for county employees and their families. Tina Adamson arranged to have plenty of beverages and Daylight Donuts ready when they came. One mission of the day was to set up the huge blue water slide whale, the maze bouncy house, and the little tots bouncy house to test them and enjoy them. She also had Russ Watson’s family Smokin’ Barbeque prepare their meat to eat with the salads, vegetables, and desserts that people brought.
Weisbrod Auxiliary met Tuesday at JJ’’s Restaurant. Linda Trosper is proceeding to plan the November 20 Fall Bazaar, which we hope to host this year. Diana Flory agreed to be the interim Vice President until the December elections because Madonna Pollreis is moving. We will miss Madonna because she has been an integral part of our group for many years. She is donating table clothes for our use at the Bazaars.
When I visited Weisbrod Hospital, I was pleased to see that Jimmy Bendorf has come back home. He is eager for more physical therapy so he can get more mobility plus he would surely like to see more visitors. Friends, you may be surprised to know that residents in Weisbrod and Prairie Pines often ask, “what is the news around town?” They are often rather lonesome. Let us visit or call them more often. Frankie Stoker had a couple days with birthday parties with his families and residents. His twins, Brent and Kent, drove down from Bennett in their shiny black-silver limousine. Of course, Glenda Stoker brought homemade ice cream.
Tanya Lane, Activity Director at Weisbrod, works hard to beautify both floors and wings by making colorful employee name posters for the doors and departments. This month her theme is pretty sunflowers on moss green scrapbook paper with a poetic, encouraging lines. I have heard her for many years read the newspaper to residents who want to listen.
The Colorado State University Extension trailer was parked north of the courthouse last week so that extension office workers, Tearle Lessenden and Krystal Eikenberg, could pack it with 4-H projects to be taken to the Colorado State Fair after he picks up projects from other counties. They will be on display at the Kiowa County Fair September 9-11 also.
Our communities offer our sincere sympathy to our Superintendent of Schools, Glenn Smith and his family following the death of his brother in Goodland, Kansas, last week. If you are a praying person, please pray for Mr. Smith and his family, who are still grieving the loss of his wife and mother of their children, Tracy.
