Doris Lessenden

God says, “Call to me, and I will answer you, great and mighty things which you do not know.” Jeremiah 33:3 NKJV

August 11 is an important day for a highly esteemed lady of our county. Mary Marble of Chivington will be 100 years old. Family and friends are invited to celebrate with her from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Prairie Pines Assisted Living Community where she lives. Mary’s daughter, Alta Joy and Don McBee of north of Lamar, and her son Joe (Hobie) and Karen who live north of Lamar. Mary is remembered as the Postmaster for Chivington. She is a gifted poet. When I have marveled to read her many poems and wistfully wished I could write so prolifically, Mary says, “Oh, Doris, you can do it, it is easy.” The late Dennis Weber told me that she taught him to dance at a dance when he was a young guy. Many folk around here remember him as one of the most graceful dancers around. Happy birthday, Mary (Osborn) Marble!

July 29 was “Parent’s Day,” which was established by President Bill Clinton in 1994. The resolution recognizes the uplifting and supporting of parents in rearing children. Many of us know how wonderful it is to live near a supportive family, or friends who can help a parent or parents when there is a need. Now that I live around many people in their elder years, I also see some folk who enjoy the loving frequent visits of their children and families.

Several years ago, Liz Hulteen helped me with my great niece and nephew, Kaiden and Kodie Diltz-Lessenden, to touch-up the murals on the restroom building at the south end of the fairgrounds arena. Some of my art students had painted them years ago. I was glad when she told me that she and her little grade school nephew and niece, Wyatt and Tess Van Campen, repainted the horses in the sunset and sunrise scenes on the four sides of the building. Thank you, Liz and children, for caring about our community.

Last week, for a few short days, was so good for the Stoker-Lessenden families because our dear Colby (Stoker) and her new husband, Tyler Hill, were here to take part in the wedding of her classmate, Amber Kopazs, to Huveia Gonzales. An added bonus was that Tyler’s parents and sister, Maddie, came to Colorado, too. Later, I learned that there were eight bridesmaids and eight groomsmen, plus such a large wedding party near Amber’s country home, with a prime rib dinner at the Cow Palace in Lamar. Another note was that my nephew, Tearle Lessenden, was the marriage officiant. He has many talents.

We wish our friend Jack Johnson of Kit Carson a speedy recovery. Jack had a bad fall in his home. He has been in several hospitals. Jack graduated from CSU-Fort Collins, and has traveled as he worked for many years in numerous countries which were mostly in desert nations. If you are a reader of his interesting articles, you may have enjoyed some of his published columns. Jack is a graduate of Kit Carson High School in the 1950s.

Dennis and Eva (Shade) Voss of Chamberlin, South Dakota, gave Terri (Herrell) Voss a surprise visit at her new home in Weisbrod Extended Care. They told us that it is so pretty and green up in the Dakotas because they had so much snow. They were on their way to their former home: Las Animas.

Congratulations to Brenna Rouse who was married to Tom Compton last Saturday at Praise Community Church in Eads. Their reception was in the community building at the fairgrounds in Eads. Brenna worked as a para-professional for several years in Eads, and now has a job teaching Kindergarten in Wiley. Best wishes to the young couple.

Last Thursday was the first Thursday of the month brunch at the Eads Senior Citizen Center. The Eads senior lunch will be August 21. Haswell Westenders will meet August 7 and 21.

School will begin in Eads August 7, 8, and 9. This is Wednesday through Friday. Friday attendance is a makeup day for the day taken off for the county fair. Some people think it is too early for school to begin, but that is the state rule.

4-H achievement day results will be published soon.

Potential exhibitors: You have about a month to finish your county fair exhibits.
