“The Lord is my Shepherd, I lack nothing.” Psalm 23: 1 (NIV)
We celebrated the annual Hospital Week, which has always been an enjoyable five days. Last week was more special in many ways. The leadership team of several “office women” arranged events with a bit more polish. Each day was a “dress day” when the department employees really spent time and extra money on ordering costumes, hairdos, and make-up in some cases. Friday they wore their typical department attire.
Sunday, our new Activities Director, Brenda Leon, parked her long horse trailer and pickup truck parallel to the hospital and unloaded lots of flower, vegetable plants, and lager plotted flowering plants. She had spent several days digging out the rocks and old soil in the patio planting place. Monday afternoon, Brenda and some more able-bodied residents and staff planted the blooming plants. They are beautiful, and even more so because the Lord blessed us with a two-day slow rain, which also caused the brown prairie to become lush and green.

Every day at 11:15 a.m., most all the residents are in the large dining room following an exercise expert on the television screen. This is one of the best things for our bodies and minds. I do hope you take time to exercise and walk about.
Last Friday, two young firemen, Weston Meardon and Jacob Muehlbauer, brought the big shiny fire truck with water for the “duck race.” They needed all that water because people had bought 360 ducks to float down the water path in front of the Weisbrod Health facility. I didn’t know that they gave the ducks back to the people.
It was a lovely evening for the barbeque that was served by Marla Darnell and her staff - Robin Boyher, J.B. Brown, Brenden Refeinshnider, and Trista Wood. One of the highlights of the evening was the singer, John Leon, from Tribune, Kansas. After the dinner, Chad Rouse and Mike Lening explained the opportunity to donate to the drawing to earn funds for making a community gym center. That was followed by a moving speech by Beth Bell, CEO, about the new clinic to be built, and future plans. Members of the leadership team then went across the street attired with white bucket caps and green hazard vests for the groundbreaking of the new clinic and therapy rooms as we watched from our tables.
Friday was special for me and other local folks who enjoyed personal visits from three of the Lujan brothers, who were here to attend the funeral of their former neighbor, Bob Miller. Those Lujan brothers who came were Carl of Oklahoma, Kelly of New Mexico, and John of Missouri. They are looking forward to returning to the county fair in September.
The next day was LaVerle Kelley’s funeral, where her six children and many relatives and friends gathered to honor this wonderful woman who came as a new nurse from Minnesota. Her plan to stay a year as a nurse at Weisbrod turned into a lifetime of service to this county and state. She was a beloved knitting 4-H leader, school nurse, county nurse, aerobics swim instructor and school board member. Besides enjoying traveling to many countries, she liked games of chance.
Many mothers around the community received pretty bouquets or blooming plants for Mother’s Day. That is so heartwarming to the mothers. I do thank you and commend you if you are one of those givers. Brenda Leon gave us lovely pink satin rose corsages trimmed with satin beads Mother’s Day morning.
Aaron D. Musgrave graduated from McClave High School last Sunday. His aunt, Robin, was glad to tell me that he was the Salutatorian of his class. He studied at schools in Eads a few years ago until his father, Joe’s, job took him south.
The Eads girls golf team competed at state on the Holydot course last weekend. The Eads track team competed at state in Denver last weekend also.
The Eads Elementary School classes had fun and entertaining field day trips last week on different days to different places. The most fun one, I think, would have been when the fourth and fifth grades went to Elitch Gardens theme park.
The Weisbrod Health Auxiliary met for lunch last Wednesday, where they made plans for another Bingo party for the residents. Carl Blodgett sent word that a new custodial employee will be employed, so he plans to have the man help him install some new shades we inquired about. We also updated the resident birthday calendar and other projects. The next meeting will be June 10. We do welcome men or women to come meet with our group to plan ways to make life of residents more enjoyable.
At the student awards banquet last week in the Eads gymnasium, many awards were given. Some were for academic excellence, and others were for clubs and activities as well as sports. What warmed my heart was that five mothers, who are photographers, share their sports photos primarily with the media. Teacher LaDawne Brittin presented engraved plaques to Andrea Buller, Braylynn Eder, Holly Mitchek, Monica Uhland, and Sharon Wilson, thanking them for sending their photos to the newspapers and school. Raina Lucero wrote, “thank you for their love for our students and for their dedication to preserving these memories is a gift of love.”
