“A generous person will prosper” Psalm 11:25

The Kiowa County fairgrounds continue to be a place of various activities for the enjoyment of people. Last weekend was the annual Mike Johnson Memorial Team Sorting event. Mike was a well –liked rancher who was active in the community before his untimely death at the ranch. His volunteer work and service on the county fair board was greatly appreciated. He and Martha and their three girls moved here from Texas to manage the ranch. Martha remained, and is the proprietor of J&J Liquors on Highway 287. Before the memorial event at the pavilion, Martha’s daughter, Morgan, was hosted with a baby shower at the Eads Senior Citizen Center. Morgan’s baby girl, Ellis Beth, just arrived recently. I saw the beautiful little dark-haired baby when Morgan and Hunter brought her up to Weisbrod to meet her great grandfather, Ellis Wilson.

We are pleased that Justin Lenox has organized a trap shoot club at Eads High School. How wonderful that the club can use the shooting range at the fairgrounds to practice for their competitions. I wasn’t aware of the shooting range until Dave and Shellie Englehardt were married out there. Since then, I have gone with some 4-H members to watch their progress.

Last Friday, we were pleased to see the volleyball and football games on the television screen. Saturday, Prairie High School traveled to Eads to play volleyball. It ended in a tough fifth game, with an Eads win.

Many parents are busy Saturdays taking their grade school-age children to Lamar to play in youth leagues in various sports and gymnastic training as well as dance lessons. One Eads sophomore, Anthony Paez, is a standout member of the Lamar soccer team. It is good that young people have more choices these days to play sports that fit their talents and skills.

Although our Eads High School golf team didn’t win a high score at the state golf tournament, I heard that they had a good educational time there with their coach, Justin McCloud. Eads golfers were Aiden Hough, Gage Rittgers, Karsten Bulller, Jason Bletzacker, Brendon Frammel of Kit Carson, and Aaron Musgrave.

Many adults enjoy playing golf also. Recently, Tom Richards won the championship in the golf tournament. At the next women’s tournament, Kim Richards took top place, followed by Dawna Peck and Brandy Barnes. At another contest, Gail Crawford and Ryan Wyatt won the two man scramble.

The Down East Boys quartet, which travels across the United States, gave a concert at Praise Community Church in Eads Sunday. They are always so inspirational to hear. To get to hear our own Jimmy Brown play the piano and perform with them is even more of a blessing.

Another blessing last week was when Linda Trosper found her mailbox stuffed with a big bag of delicious cherry tomatoes that her mail carrier, Fran Larrew, had harvested from her garden for Linda to share with the Weisbrod residents. Linda divided them into little bags for many of the ladies here.

It took a lot of planning and work for Gail Voss, but she did It again! She prepared such a tasty main dish, country fried steaks, for the Eads senior citizen’s monthly meeting. Joe Schmitt’s daughter and granddaughter, Marsha and Pam, often bless our group with their presence from Denver at our meal. They are always so generous too, like donating tableware, plastic containers, napkins, and turkeys. Thank you, ladies! Weisbrod CEO Beth Bell spoke to the group to explain the very important ballot measure regarding the hospital district. Beth graciously explained that the new Kiowa Health van for the dental hygienist will probably be opened in December. The dental specialist will be able to clean teeth and send information and tests on a person’s dentist if they have a family dentist, as well as can send details of the dental history. We are so thankful to have this professional service in our community.

The “Merry on Maine” Christmas event that the Crow Luther Cultural Events Center hosts will be December 22. We decided that since there will be a quilt show in the Eads Senior Citizen Center that we just could not also host offering food. It is hoped that some other group would want to have a money-making project and have a café booth.

We do give a huge congratulations to Madison McDowell, who recently received a sizable scholarship to Oklahoma Panhandle State University, where she is studying to be an elementary teacher. Her brothers, Trey and Cade, are graduates of PSU-Goodwell also.

Bill and Charlotte Woelk brought the Sunday program from the Sheridan Lake Bible Church. It announced another pumpkin patch fun day out at the Harris farms northwest of Sheridan Lake. Children can choose a pumpkin and participate in fun games. October 27, there is a “Trunk or Treat” at the patch from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. At 5:00 p.m., kids can ride a hayrack into town. Families are invited to bring a crock pot of chili (for a cook off) and a dessert to share with others. Nurse Shelby told me that she and her little boys helped her father plant two seeds in each hole, and they harvested about 806 pumpkins. Doesn’t that sound like lots of fun?
