George Wick, editor of the Bent County Democrat, 1899 to 1930, as portrayed by Tim Baublits at the 2023 Boggsville Cemetery Tour.

The cemetery tour is Boggsville’s spring fundraiser. Come enjoy the fun and hear the stories of our ghostly residents but be ready for some surprises.

You’ll meet Peter G. Scott, the first public school teacher in Bent County, who interviewed for his job while branding cattle for the school superintendent and Lottie Gardner who, after losing her husband, started cooking meals for cowboys at 25 cents each and would become the owner of the Las Animas luxury hotel, The Gardner House.

Thadeus Huey was a prosperous rancher with a wayward son who was arrested for stealing and consuming the sacrificial wine at St Mary’s Church.

Andrez Luhan, who was born in Spain, came to America as a two-year-old, travelling around Cape Horn to Los Angeles with his aunts. He died at the age of 93 after walking 22 miles to Las Animas to try and find a doctor.

Finally, you will meet the famed William Bent, founder of Bent’s Fort and namesake of the county.

Wagons load every 30 minutes at the Boggsville Historic Site and each tour takes approximately one hour.

A fee will be charged for people 7 and older; children under 6 are free. All proceeds support the preservation of Boggsville. Enjoy refreshments and tour the historic Boggsville homes while you wait.

Reservations are not necessary however larger groups are encouraged to do so to ensure group members are seated in the same wagon. Call 303-427-2317 to make a reservation.

If you haven’t been to Boggsville lately, you’ll be amazed at the recent preservation progress that is underway. Come out and have some fun while learning about our early Bent County residents. The Boggsville Historic Site is located at 28120 Colorado Highway 101 in Las Animas, about two miles south of the courthouse on Hwy 101.
