Colder weather moving into southeast Colorado for the weekend
While Friday remains relatively warm for this time of year in southeast Colorado, Saturday takes a turn toward winter with freezing rain and snow.
Highs in the upper 40s to low 50s are predicted for Friday in Cheyenne Wells, Eads, Kit Carson, and Lamar, before dipping to the mid- to low 30s Saturday as an upper ridge moves out of the area Friday night.
An upper low is expected to move in for the weekend. Later Saturday, freezing drizzle or rain is predicted in Kiowa and Prowers counties, shifting to snow overnight, along with wind gusts around 15-25 miles per hour. In Cheyenne County, snow is expected Saturday night, along with wind gusts to 30 mph.
Snow accumulation is expected to be in the 1-3 inch range, with the greatest amounts in northern areas, particularly toward the Colorado-Kansas border.
All areas are expected to remain below freezing Sunday, with highs in the mid-20s to around 30. Overnight, lows are expected to drop to the single digits. North wind continues with gusts around 30 mph, tapering later in the day.
For Monday, temperatures return to the upper 30s under mostly sunny skies and minimal wind. Another weather system is forecast to drop south across the mountains into the Four Corners region.
Sub-freezing highs and some chances for snow return to Tuesday’s forecast, along with lows falling back to single digits. Potential for precipitation lingers until late next week.
