Kiowa County has been grateful for the much-needed spring rains. It is nice to see how green it can be after the dry 2020 summer.
With all the rain and the green vegetation many producers and I have been playing the game of what is this weed? All of them have been common species but there is a greater number than they have seen in the past. The biggest question was making sure that they were not poisonous.
I am writing this on June 18, 2021, and we have had 100 degrees-plus weather days this week, so wheat will be turning fast, and pastures and spring crops will need a drink.
DVI Creative Cooks and Cake Decorating was held June 17 in Eads at the new Kiowa County Eads Senior Citizen Center. The center was finished this last winter for use. It has been restored through grant funding, the Kiowa County Board of County Commissioners and public input.
It was exciting to see youth competing and expanding their knowledge in the process.

DVI district shoot was held at the La Junta Rifle Club. I would first like to thank the club for the use of the great facility, and all the leaders, volunteers, and parents. There were 90 entries in this event. It was a great day for the youth to compete in person again. I would like to thank the Ming ranches for donating the hamburgers for the lunch.
