Frost gives way to sunny weekend warm-up in Cheyenne Wells
Cheyenne Wells and surrounding Cheyenne County will start the weekend with widespread frost early Saturday before a sunny, dry warm-up settles in through Sunday, according to forecasters with the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kan.
Saturday is forecast to begin with frost across portions of the area before clearing to sunny skies, with afternoon highs reaching about 70 degrees and light northwest winds. Sunday turns warmer still under mostly sunny skies, with highs around 78 and west winds at 5 to 10 mph.
A “Rex block” over the West sets up calm weather
A meteorologist with the Goodland, Kan., forecast office wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion that an upper-level ridge along the Pacific Coast will build east into the Rockies, while a low pressure system stalls offshore California — a pattern forecasters describe as a “Rex block.”
“Patchy frost and/or a light freeze is possible over portions of the area tonight and Saturday morning,” the forecaster wrote, with low confidence on whether temperatures fall below freezing for more than a short period.
Gardeners with newly planted vegetables or sensitive landscaping in Cheyenne County may want to cover plants Friday evening and again Saturday morning, particularly if winds go calm overnight. Fire weather concerns remain limited through the weekend, and there are no active red flag warnings for the area.
