The Colorado State Patrol responded to a two-vehicle crash on Highway 50 near Lamar Sunday shortly after 10:00 p.m. which closed the eastbound lanes.

The crash occurred at Prowers County Road 7, and involved a Kiowa County Sheriff’s Office deputy who was responding to a crash in Kiowa County. A 2013 Dodge Challenger pulled out in front of the deputy’s vehicle, and the two collided.

Three people from Hulbert, Oklahoma, were in the Challenger. An 89-year-old woman passenger died at the scene. A second passenger, a 62-year-old woman, received serious injuries, and the driver, a 65-year-old man received life-threatening injuries. Both were transported to a hospital in Colorado Springs.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of moderate injuries.

The highway reopened in the early morning hours of Monday.

The crash is under investigation.
