Lamar and Prowers County will be sunny and unusually warm Monday, with a high near 88 degrees and gusty southwest winds, before a cold front brings cooler air and a chance of showers and thunderstorms Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.

Monday will be sunny, with a southwest wind of 10 to 15 mph and gusts as high as 30 mph. Monday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 56 and gusts as high as 35 mph.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion that "the plains will remain warm and largely dry through Tuesday," with colder and wetter conditions expected to follow a cold front by Wednesday.

Gusty, warm conditions before the front

No Red Flag Warning is in effect for Prowers County, and the Pueblo forecast discussion lists no watches, warnings or advisories. Even so, warm temperatures and gusty winds can raise grass fire danger, and residents should use caution with outdoor burning.

The Pueblo office said the cold front could reach the plains Tuesday night, but that the latest guidance is slower than earlier runs, so the front and its moisture may be delayed until Wednesday morning.

Wednesday brings a 20 percent chance of showers, with thunderstorms possible after noon. Chances rise to 50 percent for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night.
