  • Plainview’s Alyssa Splitter was named NCA All-American at the National Cheerleading Association camp held at Lamar Community College.
  • The Former Hilltop Texaco and Carrie’s Collectables in Kit Carson was having a total liquidation sale.
  • Commissioner’s Corner- Dick Scott: We are looking into the possibility of making the Kiowa County Courthouse publicly-accessible by the west entrance only.

  • Noise, vandalism, trespassing top the agenda on the Eads Board of Trustees meeting.
  • USDA Update- Rod Johnson: Yields are generally good to excellent in the 30-60 bushel range, but wheat prices under the $2 bushel puts a damper on an otherwise good harvest.

40 Years Ago - July 20, 1984

  • Rain, hail, and heavy winds swept through southeast Colorado. The hardest hit area was north of Sheridan Lake with a reported 15 inches of rain fell.
  • The second Haswell School reunion was held. The classes of 1924,1934, 1944, and 1954 were honored.
  • Nursing Home News- LaVerne Fischer: The Karval Keenagers played after a delicious dinner prepared by our dietary cooks.

50 Years Ago - July 19, 1974

  • Cheyenne Wells has been chosen as 1 of 2 counties to serve as USDA service center in Colorado.
  • Mrs. Lois Sibcy opens an antique shop. The shop has a variety of items, ranging from glass marbles to paintings.
  • The U.S. Geological Survey reports the ground water levels in the area between Towner and Holly have declined 3 to 7 feet since last year.

75 Years Ago - 1949

  • Sheriff Eugene Kelley informed the Press that hot check artists were at work in the territory and businesses should be wary of taking check from strangers.
  • Citizens of Prairie Queen voted to dissolve the district as a school unit.

100 Years Ago - 1924

  • Harold Pyles took the train to Pueblo July 4. He was compelled to await the noon passenger as the first train failed to wait on him to get up and get dressed.
