15 Years Ago - June 18, 2010

  • Thirty-five states to the east of Colorado are currently considered infested or partially infested with Japanese beetle.
  • Kiowa County Hospital District announced the employment of two new physicians. They are a husband and wife team that practice family medicine.

25 Years Ago - June 23, 2000

  • Kiowa County Growers Inc. reached its first goal in the sale of shares in the company, surpassing the June 14 target of $415,000.

40 Years Ago - June 21, 1985

  • The Wheatland Café opens in Sheridan Lake. When Bob and Ellen leased the Bread Basket Café, they realized it was too small, so they renovated their building that used to be a hotel. They went from seating capacity of 20 to 70 seats.
  • Tidwell’s Furniture Inc.’s building and property in Lamar has been sold to Veirs Home Furnishing of La Junta. Tidwell’s has been family operated since 1912.

50 Years Ago - June 20, 1975

  • Three tornados were sighted. One, seven miles north of Eads following the path of Rush Creek. Another east of Kit Carson and another about 15 miles north touched down. No damage reported.
  • The old drug store located on Maine Street in Eads will soon be opened as a malt shop.
  • William Woelk has a patent application pending in the US Patient Office for a wind baffle to be mounted of the roof of a vehicle. The invention is designed to deflect the wind across the cab to eliminate the vacuum of drag behind the vehicle.

75 Years Ago - June, 1950

  • Friday night flood or rain and hail west of Haswell sent water across the Missouri Pacific track on a stretch about half mile long washing the bed out delaying the train about an hour.

100 Years Ago - 1925

  • The Kiowa County Commissioners examined the possibility of not having a county fair this year. Decision has not been made.
