Cheyenne Wells and Cheyenne County are in for a warm, largely sunny weekend, with only a slight chance of a thunderstorm Friday evening before a stretch of hot, dry weather settles in. Friday brings sunny skies and a high near 87, with highs climbing into the low 90s Saturday and Sunday as high pressure builds over the region.

Friday will be sunny with a high near 87 and northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph becoming easterly in the afternoon. Friday night carries a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9 p.m., with mostly cloudy skies gradually clearing and a low around 59.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., noted in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion that "a few severe storms are possible Friday afternoon and evening, mainly along and south of I-70," while pointing to an increasing signal for a prolonged period of hot and dry conditions starting this weekend.

Storm risk Friday afternoon and evening

Forecasters said showers and storms developing to the west could push into the area Friday afternoon, but with high pressure building aloft and the surface low tracking farther south, coverage and intensity should be lower than in recent days. If storms do hold together, large hail and wind gusts are the main concerns, with any activity entering Kit Carson and Cheyenne counties around 4 to 5 p.m. before moving southeast and out of the area by evening. There is also a chance storms miss the area entirely.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday will be sunny with a high near 91 and light southeast winds. Saturday night stays mostly clear with a low around 60. Sunday brings sunny skies and a high near 92, with southeast winds increasing to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon and an overnight low around 61.

Extended outlook

The hot, dry pattern holds into the new week. Monday and Tuesday both bring sunny skies, highs near 91 and light winds, with overnight lows around 61. Forecasters expect relative humidity to fall toward 20 percent over east central Colorado by the middle of next week, which remains below fire weather warning levels but is worth watching given drying fuels.

No fire weather warnings were in effect for Cheyenne County as of Friday morning. Residents should still use caution with any open flames as vegetation continues to dry out.
