Storm chances linger in Lamar through the weekend before mid-90s heat returns Tuesday
Prowers County faces showers and thunderstorms nearly every day and night from Friday through the weekend, with highs easing from the low 90s into the mid-80s before sunshine and a high near 96 return Tuesday.
Friday brings partly sunny skies and a high near 92 in Lamar, with a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 5 p.m. Light and variable winds become southeast at 5 to 10 mph in the afternoon. Friday night carries a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 2 a.m., with a low around 63 and new rainfall of a tenth to a quarter of an inch possible — higher in thunderstorms.
"Multiple rounds of showers and thunderstorms today through Monday with a continued flash flood risk on area burn scars," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, noting that "cooler temperatures in the 80s" will hold through the weekend before "drier and warmer weather likely for mid to late next week."
Repeated soakings possible into Sunday night
Persistent southwest flow aloft will carry waves of energy across southeastern Colorado through Sunday, with plenty of low-level moisture in place. Pueblo forecasters noted dewpoints in the upper 50s to mid-60s across the plains and elevated atmospheric moisture, meaning storms will be efficient rain producers capable of locally heavy downpours.
No watches or warnings are in effect for Prowers County as of Friday morning; a Flash Flood Watch issued Friday applies to burn scar areas well to the west. The wettest window for Lamar looks to be Sunday night, when the chance of precipitation reaches 90 percent and a quarter to a half inch of new rain is possible.
