Storms possible Wednesday night in Kiowa County before a 93-degree Friday
Kiowa County residents can expect a mild, breezy Wednesday followed by a good chance of overnight thunderstorms, then a sharp warm-up to the low 90s by Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo.
Wednesday brings mostly sunny skies at Eads with a high near 87. Winds will be north-northwest at 5 to 10 mph before turning north-northeast at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, making for a breezy day. Wednesday night carries a 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after midnight, with increasing clouds and a low around 58. Rainfall of a tenth to a quarter inch is possible, with higher amounts in any thunderstorm.
"An interesting scenario develops as the guidance has rather high pops over all of the southeastern plains tomorrow evening and tomorrow night," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Tuesday's Area Forecast Discussion, attributing the forcing to a shortwave moving through developing west-northwest flow aloft. Forecasters trimmed the probability numbers to scattered coverage for most of the overnight period.
Heavy rain threat
Kiowa County drew particular attention in Tuesday's forecast discussion, with forecasters noting that computer guidance had been persistent in showing high one-hour rainfall totals over the far eastern plains Tuesday evening. Forecasters raised expected rainfall amounts for the region and issued a mesoscale graphic describing the threat.
No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Pueblo forecast area as of earlyTuesday evening, though thunderstorm warnings were issued overnight. Forecasters did flag marginal critical fire weather conditions Thursday and Friday, but confined those concerns to the interior mountains rather than the eastern plains, where single-digit minimum humidity and breezy conditions are expected.

Winds strengthen further Sunday night, reaching 25 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph under partly cloudy skies and a low around 57. Forecasters expect scattered storms in the mountains each weekend day with only isolated activity over the plains.
Motorists and anyone handling high-profile vehicles or equipment should plan for strong crosswinds Saturday and again Sunday night. Forecasters expect a continued cooling trend into early next week with better chances for showers and thunderstorms as a cold front moves down the plains.
