The Colorado Department of Transportation and its contract partner, Schmidt Construction Company, will begin a surface treatment project on April 6 along US Highway 24 in eastern El Paso County. Paving work will take place on a ten-mile stretch from east of Peyton to Calhan, between Mile Point 332 and Mile Point 342.5. The project is expected to be completed by late September.

CDOT has undertaken similar resurfacing work on rural highways in the region. In May 2025, a road resurfacing project began on CO 59 near Kit Carson in eastern Colorado.

"US 24 is a busy highway for eastern El Paso County travelers," said CDOT Regional Transportation Director Shane Ferguson. "The new road surface will make travel smoother for commuters, agriculture and freight traffic."

The work will include minor culvert repairs, curb and gutter replacement, construction of a passing lane east of Calhan and widening of a right-turn lane at Yoder Street to improve safety. The improvements will create a smoother roadway with increased resistance to rutting and road damage.

Beginning April 6, motorists will encounter lane closures guided by flaggers and pilot cars, with delays of up to 15 minutes. Daytime work hours will be Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from April through July. Nighttime work hours will be Sunday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. from May through September. The project team will try to maintain two-way traffic during daytime hours where the roadway allows.

The speed limit will be reduced to 25 mph in town and 40 mph out of town. A lane width restriction of up to 11 feet will be in place.
