Sand Creek Massacre NHS announces new acting site manager
Bill Fields has been named the new acting site manager for the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site in Kiowa County
Fields has been with the National Park Service since 1993 when he started as a volunteer at Thomas Stone National Historic Site in southern Maryland. He spent the next several years there as an interpreter and at other national parks in the northeast.
In 2001, he became a commissioned Ranger, and spent the last 23 years as a Law Enforcement Ranger. Currently, Fields’ home park is Fort Donelson National Battlefield, where he is the Chief Ranger. This park is located in Dover, Tennessee, about two hours northwest of Nashville.
Fields is married and has a 14-year-old daughter. His wife and daughter joined him for his first three weeks here as acting Site Manager, and really enjoyed their time here. His wife is from Fritch, Texas, located between Dumas and Amarillo, Texas, and is familiar with the geography of this part of the world.
For the remainder of his two months of acting assignment, Fields intends to have an open-door policy and looks forward to speaking with anyone who desires to stop by the visitors’ center.
