About Town – August 30, 2021

Galatians 6:2 “Bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

The scripture above reminds me of how thankful I am for neighbors and dear folk who did such kind deeds for me over the past few days. To name a few, they are Mona Walker, Dianne O’Brian, Liz Hulteen, Bob Alfano, Robin Musgrave, Kathy McCracken, Willie Ramos, Areta Blooding-Laird, Saige Sagner and Darrell Stolzenberger.

August 22, we watched part of the try outs for the Rodeo Royalty Court. I was told that they don’t tell who won the titles until Saturday of the Fair.

Hadlie Rittgers worked at the Wiley Bank because she didn’t have in-person classes at Adams State University, but now she is finishing her senior classes in Alamosa plus teaching classes at Sangre de Christo High School.

Several mornings each week, ladies enjoy water aerobic exercises at the lovely Prairie Pines swimming pool. People can buy a season pass to swim a number of times, which is service of the facility.

Genoa-Hugo High School came to Eads to play football Friday night. They won in an exciting game announced above the field by Betsy Barnett. KVAY announcer Dick Peecher reported a colorful commentary of the close game. He is so detailed from a referee and coach’s viewpoint. Plus, he gives many facts from history of our teams. He chose Dante Sierra, an Eads High School senior, to be the most valuable player for his outstanding blocking, running, and smart plays. The game this Friday will be in Granada, and in Tribune, Kansas, September 10.

Principal Bohlander announced that homecoming plans have changed from October to September 17 when Walsh plays here since Manzanola doesn’t have a football team. The pep rally will be Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Friday will feature bolleyball matches and football games with the dance following.

Marilyn (Fell) White’s funeral was at the Kit Carson Methodist Church. She was a much-loved woman who lived most of her life near Kit Carson where she and her husband, Norman, raised their children, Melodie, Scott, and Perry, plus 69 foster children through the years.

Cardon and Joyce Berry hosted the class of 1960 reunion last weekend in Eads. Saturday at noon, they had dinner at the senior citizens center and, that evening, they dined at JJ’s Restaurant.

Next Saturday is Kit Carson Day, where one can enjoy watching a rodeo Saturday morning, and then the noon barbeque by the community building. There will be a parade at 1:30 p.m., and then games for the kids near the new school. At 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. people can buy tickets to watch the Melodrama in the old saloon. This is followed by a dance.

Here in Kiowa County, children and adults will be preparing for the Kiowa County fair which begins next Wednesday. The entry forms to show exhibits are expected to be handed in at the extension office by Friday orm if people want to send those via the Internet, that is fine with Krystal Eikenberg. 4-H members and FFA members will have their animals in place by Wednesday evening. Open class exhibitors are to bring their exhibits to the community building Wednesday evening between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. or before 9:00 a.m. Thursday, when judging will begin shortly thereafter. The fair board have met often during the year to organize a great fair for people. One part that will be so wonderful for the children and youth are the brightly colored bouncy house toys and animals.

One of the favorite happenings for many people is the Chamber of Commerce and county employees chuck wagon breakfasts Thursday and Friday mornings. Brandon Hoffman has been purchasing some new equipment and serving tables. There is a need for volunteers to help cook the pancakes, fry the bacon, and crack eggs for this event. You are needed - call Brandon or Dennis Pearson or Marilyn Baxter to let them know you are available to help or clean up afterwards. Readers, do remember our spectacular rodeos, Saturday morning Parade, sales at local stores, class reunions, and movies at the Plains Theatre. Dances and beer gardens are other places you can frequent, along with our restaurants: JJ’s Restaurant, Hometown Gas and Grill, Love’s Subway and Godfather’s Pizza, Cobblestone Inn’s dining room, or the 4-H concession stand.

A letter from Richard Ritchie, LaWanda (Fischer) Allee, and Wally Mosher reminds me of their various class of 1960 reunion plans during the fair. They invite the classes of 1959 and 1961 to come to their events. They will be in the parade, or come by the Ritchie home on the Hulteen lot across from the track field.

I encourage people to get out of bed earlier Thursday mornings to attend the 9:00 a.m. coffee hour at Weisbrod Extended Care Unit. Last week, we were served homemade cookies and beverages outside under the new awning purchased by donations in memory of Renee Woods and Eldon Reinert.
