Cheyenne Wells hits 93 Monday before cold front cuts Cheyenne County highs to 70
Cheyenne Wells warms to a high near 93 Monday with breezy southwest winds, but forecasters in Goodland, Kan., say a scattered storm or two Monday afternoon could turn severe before an early morning cold front knocks Tuesday's high down to about 70. Wednesday rebounds to near 82 as a wet, warm pattern settles over the area.
Monday will be mostly sunny and breezy in Cheyenne Wells with a high near 93, according to the National Weather Service in Goodland. Southwest winds of 15 to 20 mph will decrease to 10 to 15 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Monday night carries a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before midnight and a low around 57, with south winds of 5 to 10 mph turning north at 15 to 20 mph after midnight as the front moves through.
"Scattered storms possible Monday afternoon-evening. A severe storm capable of producing brief, localized wind gusts up to 65 mph and large hail cannot be ruled out," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Sunday's Area Forecast Discussion.
Severe storm chance, then a much cooler Tuesday
Goodland forecasters put the chance of storms developing Monday afternoon and evening at 50 to 60 percent, with the greatest severe risk east and south of Colby, Kan. Model soundings showed 1,500 to 2,300 joules per kilogram of instability along with favorable lapse rates and wind shear of 35 to 50 knots, a combination that supports large hail and damaging wind gusts. Forecasters noted that morning shower activity, if it develops, would cut that instability substantially.
The office also flagged breezy southwest winds Monday, mainly east of Highway 27, where sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph could gust to 45 mph during late morning and early afternoon. An early morning cold frontal passage will bring much cooler temperatures Tuesday and Tuesday night. No watches, warnings or advisories were in effect for the Colorado portion of the Goodland forecast area as of Sunday night.

Tuesday starts cloudy and gradually becomes mostly sunny, with a high near 70 — a drop of more than 20 degrees from Monday. Northeast winds of 20 to 25 mph will decrease to 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon, with gusts as high as 35 mph. Forecasters said the front may stall near the southern edge of the Goodland forecast area Tuesday, which could bring additional showers and generally sub-severe storms. Tuesday night carries a 30 percent chance of showers after midnight and a low around 52.
Wednesday will be partly sunny with a high near 82. Showers become likely Wednesday night, with a possible thunderstorm before midnight and a 60 percent chance of precipitation. The low will be around 60. Goodland forecasters put the confidence in severe weather occurring Wednesday at 5 percent or less, noting that wind shear should stay below 30 knots.

Thursday will be partly sunny with a high near 81 and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Thursday night carries a 40 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 59.
Friday turns mostly sunny with a high near 79 and a 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms continues Friday night, with a low around 55.
Goodland forecasters described warm, wet conditions in place Wednesday through Friday, with high temperatures in the upper 70s to mid 80s and a 40 percent or greater chance of more than a tenth of an inch of rain on both Wednesday and Thursday across most of the area. They noted that higher-end guidance would put Thursday and Friday highs in the upper 80s to lower 90s if southerly flow reaches farther north.
Residents should stay alert for storm warnings Monday afternoon and evening, when large hail and gusts to 65 mph are possible. Anyone caught outdoors when storms develop should move inside a sturdy building rather than shelter under trees or open structures.
