Kiowa County will see a notably cooler Friday before a weekend warm-up that pushes high temperatures into the upper 80s by Memorial Day, the National Weather Service in Pueblo said in a forecast issued early Friday.

Eads is expected to be sunny Friday with a high near 68, the coolest day of the forecast period. North-northeast winds of 15 to 25 mph will push gusts as high as 40 mph through the day before easing after sunset. A chance of showers and thunderstorms returns to the area overnight, with skies turning mostly cloudy and an overnight low near 42.

“Some scattered thunderstorms again today, not expected to be severe,” Stephen Hodanish, a meteorologist with the Pueblo forecast office, wrote in Friday’s Area Forecast Discussion. The best chances for storms remain over the Pikes Peak and Raton Mesa areas, with less coverage and less instability than Thursday’s round.

A long warm-up into Memorial Day

After Friday’s cool reset, temperatures are forecast to climb steadily through the holiday weekend. Saturday is expected to be sunny and warmer, with a high near 72 and only a slight chance of late-afternoon storms. Sunday turns sunny and noticeably warmer with a high near 85 as southerly flow returns to the plains.

Memorial Day looks to be the warmest day of the period across Kiowa County. Eads is forecast to reach 88 under sunny skies, with light south-southeast winds. Tuesday remains warm in the lower 80s but brings a return of breezy southerly winds and afternoon thunderstorm chances.

Weekend outlook

Saturday and Sunday should suit outdoor plans across Kiowa County, with sunny skies, light winds and steadily warming afternoons. The slight thunderstorm risk Saturday afternoon will be confined to scattered cells, with most of the activity expected to remain over the higher terrain west of the county.

Forecasters describe an unusually quiet stretch on the eastern plains. Hodanish noted that highs Sunday will reach the upper 80s across most of the plains, with shower and thunderstorm activity “isolated and high based.”

Extended outlook: Monday and Tuesday

A stronger upper-level system tracking through the Pacific Northwest on Monday will draw deeper moisture and stronger southerly flow into the region by Tuesday. The Pueblo forecast office is watching that system for both fire-weather and storm potential, particularly across the parched interior mountains, though the most active weather is expected to stay west of Kiowa County.

“Tuesday, moisture increases significantly over the entire region, especially over the interior mtns,” Hodanish wrote. “Storms will have the potential to be strong this day as shear will noticeably increase over the region.” Local residents can expect breezy south-southeast winds with gusts to 45 mph and afternoon storm chances; no fire weather watch is in effect for the Kiowa County fire zone.

Safety

Motorists traveling Friday should be prepared for crosswind gusts on east-west highways, and outdoor crews should watch for rapidly changing afternoon skies through the holiday weekend.
