Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and Lieutenant Governor Donna Lynne will visit Eads and travel to Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site to see the future site of a National Park Service (NPS) facility and recognize the transfer of state-owned lands to the historic site. 

After arriving in Eads at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, May 27, the governor will present remarks to the community and elected officials at the Murdock Building on Maine Street.  This building is the proposed future home of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site Visitor and Research Center and Eads Senior Citizens Center.

Governor Hickenlooper and Lieutenant Governor Lynne will then travel out to the national historic site to view the 640 acre tract the state of Colorado recently transferred to the National Park Service.  They will also visit the overlook of the massacre site and the NPS visitor contact station at the site. 

In 2014 Governor Hickenlooper became the first Colorado governor to offer an apology for the Sand Creek Massacre. The recently completed land transfer was the result of years of collaboration between the History Colorado State Historical Fund, the History Colorado Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, the Civil War Trust, and the National Park Service.
