Kiowa County reaches the hottest day of the week Friday, with sunny skies and a high near 98 at Eads, before slightly cooler air and better rain chances arrive over the weekend, the National Weather Service says.

Friday brings full sunshine and light winds that turn south at 5 to 10 mph during the morning. The temperature climbs to near 98, roughly 10 degrees above normal for late August. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops between 7 and 8 p.m., with a 10 percent chance of precipitation, before skies turn partly cloudy overnight and the low settles near 62.

"Today is expected to be the hottest day of the next 7 days," a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion, noting that forecast highs across the plains are running about 10 degrees above seasonal normals and that some locations could tie record highs.

Storm chances increase this weekend

The upper-level ridge parked over the Four Corners begins to shift east and flatten Saturday, opening the door for monsoonal moisture to return to the region. Forecasters expect a daily round of afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms beginning over the higher terrain by midday and spreading onto the plains through late afternoon and evening.

Sunday and Monday are expected to be the most active days, with some models pointing to a greater threat of stronger storms near Colorado's eastern border Sunday afternoon and evening. The Pueblo office listed no watches, warnings or advisories in effect for its forecast area Friday morning, and no Red Flag Warning covers Kiowa County.

Forecasters are also watching an increased flash flooding threat on area burn scars from Saturday through Tuesday as storm coverage and frequency rise.

A chance of showers and thunderstorms moves in Saturday night under mostly cloudy skies, with a 40 percent chance of precipitation and a low around 62.

Extended outlook

Monday returns to full sunshine with a high near 97, and a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms follows before midnight, with an overnight low around 62.

Safety

With highs approaching triple digits Friday, residents working or exercising outdoors should drink water regularly, take breaks in the shade and check on older neighbors. Storms that push off the higher terrain onto the plains this weekend may produce gusty winds and brief heavy rain.
