Lamar and the surrounding Arkansas Valley face a warm and breezy stretch beginning Wednesday, with daytime highs climbing from the upper 80s into the upper 90s by Saturday and Sunday, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Pueblo.

Wednesday is expected to be sunny with a forecast high near 89 degrees. South-southeast winds are forecast to strengthen from 5 to 15 mph in the morning to 15 to 25 mph by afternoon, with gusts reaching 40 mph. The overnight period turns mostly cloudy before clearing, with breezy southerly winds continuing through the early hours of Thursday. The forecast low is near 55.

Pueblo office forecasters noted that an upper-level pattern over the western U.S. is keeping flow across far southeast Colorado on the warm and breezy side, with afternoon wind gusts a recurring feature through the period. No Red Flag Warnings are currently in effect for the Prowers County fire weather zone, COZ236. Even so, with temperatures forecast to reach the mid-90s through the weekend and afternoon wind gusts approaching 40 mph, dry grass and brush conditions warrant caution. Residents and visitors should avoid open burning during the heat of the day and report any visible smoke or fire to local authorities.

Thursday brings the workweek's hottest day

Thursday is forecast to be the warmest day of the workweek for Lamar, with a high near 96 degrees. Skies start mostly cloudy and gradually clear to sunny. West winds of 10 to 15 mph keep gust potential lower than Wednesday. The forecast low Thursday night is near 49 with mostly clear skies. Friday returns to sunny conditions with a high near 91 and lighter north-northwest winds shifting to east by afternoon.
