  • Mumps case confirmed in Colorado. The state normally has 3-4 cases of mumps each year. The state had six cases in 2005 and only three this year including the newly confirmed case.

  • A twelve-team double elimination T-ball tournament will be held at the ball park in Las Animas.
  • Federal regulators approved the $5.4 billion merger of Union Pacific & Southern Pacific railroads.

July 3, 1981

  • The Eads Fire Department washed down a diesel spill which occurred at the Eads Conoco Station.
  • Work begins on the Eads tennis courts. If all goes well, completion should be in 2-3 weeks.
  • Nearly half of the grain has already been harvested. This year, harvest has been a big surprise for some and great disappointment for others.

July 2, 1971

  • The community of Eads can be proud of its youth, particularly Staff Sargeant Brent Ritter, who appeared on the Merv Griffin TV show.
  • A new patio and patio furniture were recently installed at the Weisbrod Nursing Home.

June 21, 1946

  • Workmen brought in a fleet of maintainers, trucks and other equipment and began repair on Hwy 287 southeast of Eads.

100 Years Ago

June 17, 1921

  • A false fire alarm sounded at 11:00 p.m. A pile of boxes in the center of the vacant lots south of the lumber yard was burned. We conclude some restless soul who was troubled with insomnia had a desire to see the fire department make a run.
  • Kiowa County purchased a sorrel horse. Mr. Tracy is the custodian of the blooded animal and is working her out every morning hitched to the lawn mower in the courthouse yard.
