A red flag warning takes effect across Prowers County on Wednesday as a hot, breezy stretch raises the fire danger around Lamar, according to the National Weather Service in Pueblo. Sunny skies push Wednesday's high to near 97 degrees, and after a brief, windy cooldown Thursday, temperatures climb toward a sizzling 101 degrees Saturday before storm chances and cooler air arrive Sunday. The warning runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Wednesday brings full sunshine and a high near 97 degrees. West-northwest winds of 5 to 10 mph turn south at 15 to 20 mph in the afternoon. Skies stay mostly clear Wednesday night with a low around 60 degrees as breezy south winds of 10 to 20 mph shift to the northwest after midnight.

Forecasters placed Prowers County and surrounding fire-weather zones under a red flag warning for Wednesday afternoon and evening, reflecting the combination of heat, low humidity and gusty winds. Open burning is discouraged while the warning is in effect.

Heat builds toward the weekend

After Thursday's cooler, windy break, the heat returns in force. Highs reach near 96 degrees Friday and climb to about 101 degrees Saturday, the hottest day of the period, under mostly sunny skies before storm chances and a cooler air mass move in Sunday.
