The Kiowa County Commissioner’s Regular meeting was called to order on June 13, 2017 at 9:00 a.m. by Chairman Richard Scott with prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Those in attendance were:

McLoud moved and Oswald seconded the motion to approve the minutes of the May 25, 2017 meeting. All Commissioners voted Affirmative.

March 12, 1993 ~ June 24, 2017

Tyson Dale Mitchek, age 24, of Cheyenne Wells, Colorado passed away unexpectedly on June 24, 2017 in Cheyenne Wells. 

Arkansas River

The Arkansas River is quickly dropping and clearing, with the flows having dropped about 40% over the last week. The river is flowing near 2000 cfs in Salida. If you have been waiting for the river to drop to attempt to fish, now is the time to go. The water is still fairly high, but is clear and the trout are hanging tight along the shoreline and looking up. This is big dry fly and streamer season, the time of year we wait for. The fishing will only improve over the next few weeks as the flows decline further.​

435 Impaired Drivers Blitzed During Summer DUI Enforcement

Artists throughout Colorado are busy preparing their artwork for the Colorado State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition. The popular and prestigious part of the annual event showcases original artwork by Colorado residents. 

All artwork chosen for the exhibition will be on display in the Fine Arts Building during the entire length of the Fair. Two divisions for artwork submission are being offered: Emerging Artist and Professional.

The Southern Plains baseball team traveled west June 24-25 to the Jim Clanton Memorial tournament held in Garden City, Kansas. The cool weather was optimum for youth baseball. The first opponent for the newly formed Southern Plains team was the Hooker Horneytoads out of Oklahoma. Starting on the mound for SP All Stars was Case Nelson. In a back and forth ballgame as time limit was quickly approaching and Southern Plains was down 7-6, Bryson Hyle reached on base hit then Spencer Uhland was walked.

You’re probably expecting me to trash this movie. And make no mistake, it deserves to get trashed. Its script is horrendous, its editing is a joke, its jokes are painful, and all the metallic whooshing and clanging get old real quick. It’s the same collection of complaints I always have about the “Transformers” movies. But I can’t work up too much ire for this movie for the simple reason that at this point I’m just too numb.

The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) reminds drivers to anticipate heavy traffic in many areas of the state over the Fourth of July weekend as the summer travel season kicks in high-gear.

All CDOT construction projects will be suspended statewide from this Friday morning through Wednesday morning, July 5. The only exception is for emergency operations.  Projects will resume their regular schedule on July 5.
