ELECTION INFORMATION:  Ballots for the June 28, 2016 Primary Election will be mailed next week June 6 – June 10, 2016.  The Primary Election will be conducted as an all Mail Ballot Election.  This means there will be no voting at precincts on Election Day June 28, 2016.  The only Voter Service and Polling Center will be the Kiowa County Clerk & Recorder’s Office 1305 Goff Street in Eads, Colorado.

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper has ordered flags be lowered to half-staff statewide on all public buildings from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, June 11, 2016 in honor of U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Jeff Kuss, a native of Durango, Colorado.

Saturday, June 11^th, the Bent’s Fort Chapter of the Santa Fe Trail Association will tour several historic sites in Southeast Colorado.  The tour will start at the Star School at 9:00 AM. The Star School is located about 3 miles west of Colorado Beef (junction of Hwys 50 and 287) or 10 miles east of Hasty. Watch out for traffic if you are coming from the west. West bound traffic is hard to see at the school. After learning about the history and reconstruction of the school we will travel to Bent’s New Fort.

The Bent County Sheriff s Office, along with the 15th Judicial District Drug Task Force (Prowers County Sheriff's Office, Kiowa County Sheriff's Office) and the Colorado State Patrol, conducted a search warrant at 10811 Highway 50 in Las Animas for an illegal marijuana grow May 31.

The search warrant seized over 200 items of evidence. The parties that have pending charges for this illegal grow are Monty Hawkins, age 59, of Las Animas, and Ricardo Martinez (AKA: Rick Martinez), age 44, of Las Animas.

Fishing is fair to good for smaller 10 – 12 inch walleye and saugeye, but larger fish are being caught. Fishing is also fair for small 6 – 8 inch crappie with a few larger fish also being caught. Fishing is also fair for wiper and white bass of various sizes. A few fish are being caught from shore, but mostly channel catfish.
