About Town – June 14, 2021
“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. I Corinthians 16: 13
Regarding the scripture above, don’t you think in these days that we are living through we need even more to be on our guard in understanding what is happening in the world and in our community? We certainly do need to be courageous and strong as we face daily trials and triumphs also. Usually, I read both our town’s newspapers with zest and enjoyment, but last week, I do admit that I was so sorrowful for a while. However on the bright side, I and many other people, are just so relieved and glad to know that we do have another experienced Sheriff and Undersheriff. Thank You, Commissioners! How wonderful for our county that Forrest Frazee was available to come back to us, and also that he hired highly the regarded Mike Schneider, who had formerly served our county. Experience and education and an important factor to many of us. It hurts my heart when I remember shattered dreams of my former students, and when I think of how one person’s act can affect so many people’s lives in negative ways. We need to remember that words can kill. These are times when we do need to be courageous and to take a positive stand for what is right.
Those who attended the 2021 Eads Consumers Supply Company annual meeting enjoyed a wonderful prime rib dinner. Carrie (Roberson) and her husband, Greg Neal, prepared the mashed potatoes, gravy, and vegetables, which were complimented by salads and desserts. Jeff Englehardt’s wife’s father prepared the delicious beef. Cleta Englehardt was glad to have all three of her children and some grandchildren there too. Mike Weirich chaired the meeting while other officers, Jeff Salisbury, Randy Carney, and Ed Jones, contributed information. Mike Weirich and Barry Koch have resigned from the board. The attendees voted to have Randy Carney continue on the board, and the new member will be Jayce Negley. Mike Weirich gave a history of some of the changes that have happened in his 34 years on the board; 25 of those were as the Chairman of the Board. He was commended by the audience and given a money gift rather than a plaque. Mike and friends were pleased to have his sister, Cathy, come from Canon City for the dinner at which she was able to visit also with her three other brothers, Jerry and Pam, John and Dawna, and Mark and Amy. One of my best memories of Mike was when he as a sophomore and our Eads Eagle team was playing in the state basketball tournament in the Coliseum when he shot a basket as the buzzer was about to ring and we won! When all the Pep Club (about 44 girls or more) was loaded in the bus, Cathy Woelk asked, “Miss Less, can we have a prayer meeting tonight?” I said “yes,” but in those days, I didn’t know much about how to do that. However, that evening I found the verse which became my favorite verse for 47 years, Philippians 4:6. Now I know the Way.
We are pleased with how well our Eads track team boys and girls are performing these days. They have only one more meet, June 19, in Limon before the state finals. Our baseball team played really well all season and were ranked fifth going into the playoffs in Las Animas June 10.
Children’s ball games are in progress, golfers are enjoying the greens at the local golf course, most daylight hours you can hear lawn mowers, and, of course, the daily rumble of 4,000 or more vehicles passing through our little town.
The staff at Prairie Pines hosted their first Friday coffee hour at 2:00 p.m. They also are offering meals at three individual prices when a person calls two hours before mealtime. The Weisbrod Hospital Auxiliary will take advantage of this offer Tuesday, July 13, to pay $10 for a fried chicken dinner before their monthly meeting at the usual time, 11:00 a.m.
Congratulations to Penny Isenbart, who has received the prestigious CHSCA “Pioneer Award” for her 28 years of volleyball coaching. She has guided 13 teams to state volleyball tournaments, and 14 years to League championships. She and her children drive from south of Stratton to Kit Carson School.
Congratulations to Ruth Fees of Plainview High School in eastern Kiowa County, who received an award for 45 years of coaching cheerleading in Holyoke and Plainview. The state CHSCA awarded Ruth a plaque for her years of dedication to student cheerleaders. We in Kiowa County also admire Ruth for her years of coaching stage plays and knowledge bowls. She is a stellar teacher and friend to many!
Doug and Rhonda Uhland have six little granddaughters who are all about the same age and were in a ballerina recital in Lamar recently. These precious little dolls all wore lavender frilly ballerina dresses. In the photo, their parents had given them lovely bouquets of flowers!
Louis and Dawn James were pleased to spend 10 days in Texas caring for their grandchildren. A highlight was to see little Alice in a ballerina recital.
Remember the Eads Senior Citizens’ noon lunch will be held June 16.
I am so thankful for my kind and helpful neighbors. Especially Bill Woelk, who often brings my mail in since I had COVID in December. I have seen him mowing his neighbor, Harvey Hollis’, and Rich and Dianne O’Brian’s lawns in June. What a neighbor! He and Charlotte are a real blessing to us.
