“It is God who arms me with strength and keeps my way secure.” Psalm 8:32 (NIV)
The thought for the day in reference to this scripture is: “When I ask for help, God will renew my strength.”
That scripture and thought is from a devotion booklet that Gail Voss brought to some of us from the Eads Community Church, and we really do appreciate them for this gift.
I wrote last week that my heart hurts so when I hear of the death of so many of my Eads Student friends. Last Sunday at the Memorial Service for Geleslie King at the Praise Community Church, there were many tears as well as pleasant moments as mourners spoke about the good memories they had of knowing “Big-G.” Others were so grateful for learning from him in the church youth group, while other expressed gratefulness for working with him and his sharing knowledge of his expertise with the music and sound system with the church and community. It was so gratifying to me, and heartwarming to watch so many of his young friends visiting and hugging and loving each other. Many came from other states and cities.
One of Geleslie’s classmates died last week, Serena Enno. Her husband, Brian, is at a loss. Serna’s mother was Bing Crow.
Congratulations to Remington and Cammie Brandt of Eads, who welcomed a precious baby son, Rowan. Her sister took loving photos of his older sister and brother welcoming him home.
A larger group of players came to the monthly Sunday evening Bingo March 2. Justin McLoud volunteered to be the caller again. People tell me that he makes the evening so delightful! Alice Glover won the “Black Out” gift.
It was such a pleasure to hear a little knock on each resident’s door Monday as Adrianne Adamson shepherded her and Robert’s three little children from door to door. They even took pretty gift sacks to the patients in the hospital. Little Huxley, Adeline, and Lyndon must have spent many hours with their aunt, Liz Hulteen, to color so many designs on wood and paper. Their cousins, Bay and Mona Rouse, colored an Easter card too. We liked the goodies in the bottom of the pretty bag, too.
Sandie Kelley has moved back to Eads from Denver, and we, her friends and family, are so glad. Sandie and Harvey were our country neighbors for many years. As I remember, Harvey found Sandie in some far away state when he worked for the Geodetic Survey Company. They were married and raised their sons and daughter about a mile from us. Sandie belonged to the “Thrifty 15” and other groups that did acts to benefit and beautify our town, such as the wooden hand-painted Christmas cut outs that decorate our various parks and the roadside park from November to January.
The Eads Chamber of Commerce met for lunch and a business meeting Wednesday a JJ’s Restaurant. President Dennis Pearson led a discussion of plans for the Kids Free Fishing Day and lunch, which Chamber provides. Jan Richards said the traditional day would be May 18, 2025. Jan has contacted Plainview and Eads schools and left scholarship applications with a deadline of May 1, 2025, so we can review them at our May meeting. These are sizeable scholarships for college bound students. Brandon Hoffman reported on the treasury, and presented a list of businesses who paid one of three levels of dues. He said there are several thousands of dollars of “Eads Bucks” that have not been used. This a reminder that it is “free” gift of money given to people: Why not spend it? Doris and Jan will arrange some photo shoots with new businesses. The next meeting will be April 9 at noon at JJ’s Restaurant.
I heard of and saw good photos of happy young boys competing in the annual children’s wrestling tournament in Eads. Then I read a thank you note that coach Dustin Uhland wrote thanking all the many volunteers who helped. Until you have taken the opportunity to attend one of these tournaments, you probably cannot even imagine how loud it is in the gym. Added to the exuberance of the young boys is the cheering of the parents and grandparents, then add on the cheering of the little girls. When I saw photos of Shaner Lessenden’s little boys, I thought they competed up at Akron or Wray, but they came all the way out here to our tournament. That is good, though, because their grandparents and cousins could see and enjoy them.
The tables were set with green clothes and the ceramic potatoes with small flowers for the monthly brunch at the Eads Senior Citizen Center last Thursday. We are really missing our president, Sylvia Weeks, but are hopeful that she will be home by the monthly meeting on Thursday, March19.
This week is an exciting time for many area schools to be in the regional basketball playoffs vying to get to play in the Colorado state basketball tournaments. Kit Carson girls will travel up to Briggsdale. Eads will host the girls’ games. The Eads boys will travel to Primero, which is up the canon above Trinidad. The two winning teams at the end of two days gets berths in the state games next week. How exciting!
