Dangerous heat is on the way for Lamar and Prowers County, with high temperatures climbing past 100 degrees Saturday and reaching about 105 on Sunday after an isolated thunderstorm chance Friday. The National Weather Service in Pueblo says hot, dry and breezy conditions will keep fire danger elevated across the southeastern plains into next week.

Friday near Lamar starts mostly cloudy, then becomes sunny with a high near 89. A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is possible after 4 p.m. as southeast winds increase to 15 to 25 mph. A 30 percent chance of storms continues Friday night, mainly before 10 p.m., with a low around 61.

“Critical fire weather conditions return this weekend and into next week,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Pueblo wrote in Friday's Area Forecast Discussion. The forecaster said dry, windy conditions and above-seasonal heat will combine to raise fire danger, with the greatest concern west of the Interstate 25 corridor but elevated conditions extending across the plains.

Extreme heat the main story

The standout this weekend is the heat. Saturday will be sunny and hot near Lamar with a high near 103, climbing to about 105 on Sunday — the hottest day of the stretch. While no formal red flag warning is in effect for Prowers County, the combination of triple-digit heat, low humidity and gusty southwest winds will keep fire danger high. Sunday night winds could gust as high as 45 mph. Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor activity that could spark a fire and to take precautions against the heat.

Saturday and Sunday

Saturday will be sunny and hot in Lamar with a high near 103 and breezy southwest winds, followed by a mostly clear night and a low around 68. Sunday is the hottest day, with a high near 105 and southwest winds gusting to 30 mph. Overnight Sunday stays mostly clear and warm with a low near 70 as south-southwest winds gust as high as 45 mph.

Extended outlook

The intense heat continues into the new week. Monday will be mostly sunny and hot with a high near 104 and west-southwest gusts to 35 mph. Tuesday stays sunny and hot with a high near 101 and lighter south winds. Forecasters say above-seasonal temperatures are likely to persist through early July.

With highs near or above 105 degrees, the heat poses a real risk. Forecasters urge residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during the afternoon, never leave children or pets in vehicles and check on elderly neighbors. Dry, gusty conditions also mean any fire that starts could spread rapidly.
