Cheyenne County stays warm and breezy through the end of the week, with sunny skies in Cheyenne Wells and highs climbing from the upper 80s Wednesday to near 97 by Sunday.

Wednesday will be sunny in Cheyenne Wells, with a high near 88 and a southeast wind of 10 to 20 mph gusting as high as 30 mph. Wednesday night will be mostly clear, with a low around 61 and southeast winds of 10 to 15 mph.

“Warm and breezy conditions continue through the end of the week,” a meteorologist with the National Weather Service forecast office in Goodland, Kan., wrote in Tuesday’s Area Forecast Discussion, adding that the weekend would turn hotter, with triple-digit temperatures possible in the region.

Ridge brings weekend heat

Forecasters said a strong ridge of high pressure over the northern Rockies will slide southward over the central and southern Rockies through the weekend, keeping the area hot and dry. An isolated shower or thunderstorm could develop Thursday afternoon in central Kansas and drift toward the area, though forecasters expect little more than a few short-lived storms, if any develop at all. Storm chances — and slightly cooler temperatures — may return Monday and Tuesday as disturbances begin riding over the top of the ridge. The Goodland office had no watches, warnings or advisories in effect for its eastern Colorado counties Tuesday.
