Hickenlooper Orders Flags Lowered to Honor Belgium Attack Victims

Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper today (Tuesday, March 22, 2016) ordered flags be flown at half-staff on all public buildings statewide beginning immediately until sunset, Saturday, March 26, 2016, and as proclaimed by President Barack Obama.

Like Flash Floods, River Flooding Also a Risk in Colorado

(Third in a week-long series on flood and fire issues in Colorado. Monday’s article can be found here.)

Today’s topic during this Flood Safety and Wildfire Awareness Week is flooding which develops in the time frame of longer than 6 hours to several days.

There have been some notable floods across the Centennial State:

In early June of 1921, a flood along the Arkansas River devastated the City of Pueblo. Scores of drownings occurred.

Spring break is over and on to track, baseball, proms and graduations. Just 9 weeks of school left, where did the year go?

Glad to hear that Denis Weber is home after spending several days in the hospital with pneumonia. This past week, Ronnie Weber and children from Washington and Linda Cochran and Connie Weber of Denver came to visit their parents, Denis and Theresa Weber. The girls went home Saturday, but Ronnie and his children will be here until Easter.

All of them took in the Splitter farm sale on Thursday.

Lamar Community College Hosting Career Expo

Lamar Community College’s annual Career Expo will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, from 9:00am until noon in the LCC Wellness Center located at 2401 South Main Street.  The Career Expo serves as part career exploration, part career fair for the community.  Lamar Community College students and community members are invited and encouraged to attend in addition to area high schools visiting.

Fire Risk Then Snow for Kiowa County Tuesday

UPDATE: The Red Flag Warning has been extended two hours - from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday)

Spring has started with a mixed bag of weather conditions forecast for the week.

Tuesday (March 22, 2016) will see a Red Flag Warning for the elevated fire danger throughout the afternoon as temperatures approach 80 degrees, humidity drops and southwest winds reach 25 miles per hour. In some portions of southeast Colorado, winds could gust to 45 mph.

By Tuesday night, a chance of rain sets in until 4:00 a.m. before turning to snow.

Kiowa County's Newman Shines at Coaches' All-State Game

Eads’ Brittanie Newman (5) keeps the dribble low and away from Mosca-based Sangre de Cristo’s Jenna McKinley (50) as she drives the lane Sunday, March 20, during the 2016 Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports All-State [Class 1A] Game played at Arvada West High School.  Newman netted two points in helping the 1A-Red side defeat the 1A-Blue, 68 to 61.

Fire Weather Returns to Kiowa County

UPDATE: As expected, the watch has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday, March 22, 2016. Look for southwest winds gusting to 45 miles per hour and humidity as low as six percent.

 

In what seems to be a routine start to the week, the National Weather Services has issued a Fire Weather Watch for Tuesday (March 22, 2016) from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. for most of southeast Colorado. The watch area includes Kiowa County.
