UPDATE: as expected, the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Warning covers all the counties under the Fire Weather Watch mentioned in the original article, and adds Crowley, Lincoln, Otero and portions of Elbert and Las Animas  Counties. Winds will be out of the south gusting as high as 50 miles per hour and relative humidity as low as 11 percent. All outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.

The Colorado Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) will start a two-week statewide rollout of the newly designed driver licenses, instruction permits and identification cards beginning April 6, 2016.  

Offices will be closed one day prior to issuing the new design to allow for the installation of new equipment and for training. Please refer to the DMV website for up-to-date closure information for specific offices.  In addition, closure information will also be posted at each office.

On Saturday, Kelli Kern and Sonny Chavez took Cora Coffman to Lamar for a belated birthday lunch and shopping.

The Plainview Junior High Knowledge Bowl team, consisting of Japhet Frey, Olivia Specht, Kyle Scott and their coach, Miss Fees traveled to Vilas for the final meet of the season.  They tied for second place.

Five Kiowa County ministers, Claire Cassell, Galen Burrnett, Delbert Beard, Russell Parker, and Tony Jensen, hosted Good Friday Candlelight Service at the Christian Church Friday.  Musicians, soloists were Margie Beard, Alicia James, Mary Eikner, and Sylvia Weeks performed resurrection songs before the worshipers left the church in reflective silence.

The Lamar Community College Runnin’ Lopes volleyball program will be under the direction of new head coach Dante Geoffrey in 2016 and beyond.

“We are excited to have Dante as our new head volleyball coach,” remarked LCC Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Scott Crampton.  “He comes from a very strong program in the Region IX-North subdivision, and I’ve already been very impressed with his professionalism and work ethic.  The LCC Volleyball program will certainly take off under his direction.”

Starting the week with fire weather alerts has been the rule for March, and this week appears to be no different despite our hopes in Friday’s report.

Monday’s fire weather potential will be more localized, and mainly be a possibility in the eastern portion of the forecast area, which could include Kiowa County. Tuesday’s potential is more wide-spread, over a longer period of the day. The National Weather Service is monitoring closely and will be issuing fire weather highlights as needed over the coming days.
