Hunting Tips - High-Altitude Survival

Every year more than a few hunters must be rescued from the wilds and high country of Colorado. Hunters get trapped by snowstorms, injured in various types of accidents or simply get lost in the woods. 

Hunters must remember that altitude can affect their health and their ability to move easily. And in the Rockies, weather can change quickly with fast-moving storms dumping a couple of feet of snow in just a few hours.

Hurricane Irma Strikes Florida, Jose at Category 4

Hurricane Irma hit the Florida Keys this morning with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, making it a category 4 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Hurricane-force winds extend 80 miles from the center of the storm while tropical storm-force wind reaches outward 220 miles. A 120-mph gust was reported on Big Pine Key while Miami International Airport had sustained winds around 60 mph and gusts approaching 100 mph.

3.8 Earthquake Near Trinidad Sunday Morning

The United States Geological Survey reports that an earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter Scale occurred Sunday at 2:34 a.m.

The quake was centered 26 miles southwest of Trinidad in Las Animas county near where a 3.7 earthquake occurred Friday morning. That quake was located just south of the Colorado-New Mexico border.

Two people reported feeling Sunday’s quake. No reports of damage have been received.

According to a 2016 National Academies of Science study, trauma is the leading cause of death for Americans under age 46.  Life-threatening injuries require immediate action to prevent an injured person from dying.
