Colorado Flood Safety and Preparedness Tips

Did you know that 267 Colorado cities and towns, and all of Colorado’s 64 counties; have been identified as being at risk for flooding? Colorado’s landscape and ever-changing weather not only creates a beautiful state, but it also creates potentially powerful flood hazard.

Floods can be one of the most damaging natural disasters. The extensive flooding along the Front Range in September 2013 showed just how real the flood threat is in Colorado. No matter where you live, work or play in the mountains, big cities, small towns or out on the plains, you can be impacted by a flood.

Home Country

By Slim Randles

“Kids got the kites up this morning down at the schoolyard,” Dud said, slipping into his chair and flipping his coffee mug to the upright and fillable position in one smooth move.

Doc nodded and spread jam on his toast. He likes grape.

“Any special shapes this year?”

“Didn’t see any,” Dud said. “Same old diamond shapes, mostly.”

“Now back when I was a kid,” Herb chimed in, “we had box kites, too. Sometimes…”

Doc grinned. “Never could make one of them. Too complicated. Just got those diamond ones, because they came almost ready to fly.”

Opinion - Protect America’s Public Lands

By U.S. Senator Michael Bennet and Backcountry Hunters & Anglers Conservation Director John Gale

In 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt came to Colorado for a three-week bear hunting trip. Perhaps inspired by Colorado’s beauty, that same year, he created the U.S. Forest Service to manage lands for public use. In 1906, he signed the Antiquities Act, which has since led to the designation of over 100 national monuments.  These were some of the first and most important steps to recognize our national treasures such as our mountains, rivers, forests, and prairies.
