Weather Outlook – the Week Ahead: Sub-freezing and Snow Potential

By Chris Sorensen

After two relatively warm days to start the new year, temperatures will drop below the freezing mark at least through Friday night.

Sunday and Monday will be mostly sunny with above-seasonal highs in the mid- to upper 40s. Overnight lows will be in the low teens to 20s.

Once the temperature drops below freezing Monday night, don’t look for warmer temperatures to return before Saturday as a cold air mass drops into the area. The high will be in the mid- to upper 20s Tuesday and Wednesday, with overnight lows falling to the mid-single digits.

Home Country

By Slim Randles

Doc wasn’t really sure just why he woke up so early this morning and went outside. It was cold, of course, as the first day of any new year is supposed to be. He and Mrs. Doc had watched some television of the parties taking place around the world, but then, about 11, he began thinking of the mystery he was reading, and how comforting and nice it is to lie in bed and read each night as part of a years-old routine.

So he went to bed and read. Mrs. Doc came in a few minutes later.

Photo of the Week

One of our most popular features over the past 15 years - a full-page color photo on the front of the Kiowa County Press showing various impressions of life in Kiowa County. While a limited number of copies continue to be printed and distributed each week at Kiowa Healthmart, COOP C-Store in Eads, Haswell Propane, and Thunderbird Petroleum, we wanted to bring this feature to our online readers as well.

Recipe - Liz’s Sparkling New Year’s Cider

Makes: 6 Servings

With two little ones in the house, I’m always looking for ways that I can introduce them to new flavors and textures of foods and beverages. This sparkling cider recipe does just that! The 100% apple juice is familiar and adds a touch of sweetness, while the cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon introduce them to new spices. The bubbles from the sparkling water also provide a fun new feeling for their mouth. Adults will enjoy this beverage too! ~Liz, CNPP Nutritionist

Ingredients

2 cups 100% apple juice

1⁄2 teaspoon star anise
