Distracted drivers are involved in an average 40 crashes each day in Colorado, and in 2016, those crashes resulted in 67 fatalities. On June 1, 2017, Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law a bill that dramatically increased a first distracted driving offense from a $50 fine and one point on a driver’s record to a $300 fine and four points.

Hurricane Irma is just one of three storms in the Atlantic region being tracked by the National Hurricane Center, and it remains the largest concern for U.S. mainland residents – particularly those in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

A new fire in Routt County, located eight miles northeast of Hayden or 13 miles northwest of Steamboat Springs, has burned 2,287 acres since its start Monday.

The Deep Creek Fire was reported at 11:15 a.m. Monday, and is located near the Steer Park Fire that was contained last week. It is unknown if the two fires are related.

Nearly 170 firefighters are working the blaze, which is burning in conifer, aspen and gambel oak trees on a mix of private and Bureau of Land Management property. The fire is encountering dead and downed trees, providing abundant fuel.

The start of the 2017 Kiowa County Fair started in earnest Thursday morning with the traditional chuck wagon breakfast hosted by the Eads Chamber of Commerce. As in the past, breakfast will again be served Friday morning starting by 6:00 a.m. Breakfast is free, though donations are appreciated to help cover the costs of food.

For a fifth year, the Colorado Corn Administrative Committee (CCAC) is accepting applications from FFA chapters around the state as part of its Colorado Corn FFA Grant Program. 

The deadline to apply is November 15. 

The Colorado Corn FFA Grant Program assists FFA chapters in Colorado on projects that lack funding in their school's budget. 

In the wake of Hurricane and Tropical Storm Harvey, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation is seeing scam artists plying their trade all over the place, and is urging caution. Whenever tragedy strikes, the scammers are not far behind. The impending impacts of Hurricane Irma may only serve to increase the opportunities for scams.
