Many folks will spend the Memorial Day weekend taking a road trip, having their first picnic of the season or enjoying that first dip in the lake or pool. Follow these American Red Cross tips to stay safe and relish all the long holiday weekend offers.
DRIVING SAFETY
Death rates from Alzheimer’s disease (AD) increased 55 percent between 1999 and 2014, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The number of Alzheimer’s deaths at home also increased during the same period, from 14 percent to 25 percent, suggesting an increase in the number of caregivers that would benefit from support, including education and case management services.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife has authorized an emergency fish salvage at Trujillo Meadows Reservoir located west of Antonito in Conejos County starting May 27. The salvage order removes all size, possession and bag limits for all species of fish.
The reservoir will be drawn down through the summer to accommodate dam repair. That work will start this fall. The reservoir is north of Cumbres Pass and Colo. Hwy 17 on U.S. Forest Service Road 118.

An arrest has been made in the Rocky Ford child death investigation from May 20.
Ryan Casias, 20, of Rocky Ford was arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in death.
Casias was taken to the Otero County Jail where he is being held on $150,000 bond. Casias was scheduled for advisement at the Otero County District Courthouse in La Junta Friday.
Police were called to a Rocky Ford home on a call of an unresponsive child May 20. Jayleianna Trujillo, age 1, was transported to the hospital for treatment and later died.
Antero Reservoir will reopen to anglers June 5, at 9:00 a.m. after a major rehabilitation project on Antero Dam.
“Denver Water is very excited to reopen the reservoir to recreation,” said Brandon Ransom, Denver Water’s manager of recreation. “We fully understand that fishing and camping are major contributors to the South Park economy, and we consider it a privilege to be able to contribute to the recreational opportunities in the region.”

To gain a better understanding of current honey bee health in Colorado, the Colorado Department of Agriculture has taken part in the National Honey Bee Health Survey for the last three years.
Drought conditions have further improved across Colorado following wide-spread rain and wet snow that closed out the previous week.
