  • EconoLodge, owned by Sailesh & May Merchant, was named Business of the Year.
  • Northbound highway 287 traffic was backed up in Eads for hours. The road was closed due to extreme wind and snow conditions further north in the state.
  • Wild Horse Roundup –Curtis Schrimp: Well, I have no notes so will write whatever while waiting for the snow.

  • Plainview School students raised over $750 to help provide funds for the Colorado Easter Seal Society.
  • Eads has been named a Tree City USA, Mayor Lester Williams reported.
  • Kiowa County 4-H Livestock Judging team wins Reserve Champion at the Otero County Livestock Judging Workshop and Contest.

  • Missouri Pacific train officials and crews are busy this week cleaning up a 45-car derailment.
  • The Fort Lyon Canal Company has started diverting water via the Kicking Bird Ditch to the Great Plains Reservoirs in Kiowa County.
  • The weed district committee urges farmers to give full consideration to the potential long-range benefits of the proposed district.

April 10, 1970

  • Reportedly, a freight train was the cause of a prairie fire a few miles west of Eads. Whipped by gusty winds, it burned several hundred acres of stubble and weeds.
  • Sheridan Lake:  Due to bad weather conditions, a trucker jack-knifed his truck on the curve just north of town.

April 6, 1945

  • Friends were sorry to learn of the resignation of John Weaver as local County Agent, effective April fool’s day. Mr. Weaver is to assume management of the County Commissioner E.T. Hawthorne’s large sheep ranch north of Sheridan Lake.

April 9, 1920

  • A carload of 30-foot poles arrived for the Eads electric light system. The big pump for the water works was also received.
  • The county garage for the big trucks is being built in the rear of the courthouse yard by Dad Clements, and is nearing completion.
