Southeast Colorado, including Cheyenne and Kiowa counties, can look for hot temperatures and slight chances of afternoon and evening thunderstorms in the coming week. During daytime hours, Eads will tend to be a degree or two hotter than Cheyenne Wells throughout the week, though a high of 100 is predicted for Cheyenne Wells Monday.

Sunday kicks off with high temperatures in the low to mide-90s, falling to the low 60s overnight.

Upper 90s are expected Monday and Tuesday, with lows in the mid-60s. A slight chance of late day thunderstorms is also expected.

Wednesday cools slightly, dropping back to the low 90s, with overnight temperatures remaining in the 60s. Thunderstorms are possible later in the day into the evening hours.

Further cooling enters the forecast Thursday and Friday, with high temperatures in the low to mid-80s predicted. Chances for afternoon and evening rain diminish.

Heat Risk

The National Weather Service office in Pueblo will now be issuing alerts based upon heat risk. Potential alert products include Heat Advisory, Excessive Heat Warning, and Excessive Heat Watch. The Pueblo office previously did not issue these alert products since overnight temperatures were usually too cool to meet traditional heat-related criteria.

Since the mid-1950s, temperatures across southeast Colorado have been rising. The average number of days with temperatures reaching at least 100 degrees has increased from 2-3 per year to about 15 per year. At least five years since 2000 have 20 or more days at or above 100.

The Boulder NWS office has also begun to issue heat-related alert products. Northern front range counties are under a heat advisory Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. as temperatures are expected to be in the upper 90s to around 100.

A heat advisory has also been issued by the Grand Junction NWS office for portions of southwest Colorado and the Grand Valley Monday from 12:00 to 9:00 p.m.. Temperatures as high as 104 are predicted.
