After abandoning his old post near present day La Junta in 1849, famed trader William Bent eventually moved east and built a new trading post on a bluff overlooking the Arkansas River in 1853. Bent’s New Fort, which played a pivotal role in shaping the American West, will be the topic of a free interpretive program presented by Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site (NHS) Saturday, April 15.

As heroin use continues to climb in Colorado and across the country, a recently formed multi-agency work group has released a report providing a detailed look at usage, overdose and treatment data.
As cleanup and repairs conclude from a devastating windstorm last month at Lake Pueblo State Park, officials have announced the reopening of the North Shore Marina and boat ramp, effective April 7.
A week later, on April 14, additional campgrounds at the park will reopen and campers will find that a major upgrade of park electrical infrastructure has improved electrical service by spreading 50-amp service to all modern campsites in the park.
