Betty Jean Holthus passed in peace May 24, 2018, at the age of 84. She was born May 4, 1934, in Denver, Colorado, to Auster (Pat) and Gladys Patton.

When you visit a Colorado State Park this summer, do more than simply as a park ranger for directions to the firewood or for tips on good hikes in the park.

Ask a ranger to tell you some war stories. Ask for their “you had to be there” stories.
The things they can tell you – the funny, scary, heart-wrenching encounters they’ve experienced on the job – will be more frightening than any ghost story you might swap with friends around your campfire that night.

Here are a couple of mine.

Another hot, dry week is in store for Kiowa County.

Sunday will be the coolest day of the week, with high temperatures in the mid-80s expected before dropping off to the mid-50 overnight.  A south wind will increase to 15-20 miles per hour, potentially reaching gusts to 30 mph during the evening. There is a slim chance of seeing showers and thunderstorms between late evening and midnight as a disturbance moves across the state.

It was like buzzards circling the body.

The Jones kid, Randy, was out in the Mule Barn parking lot with the hood up on his car. He was staring down into it the way a first-time parachutist would look out the airplane door. You never quite knew for sure what lay ahead.

“Looks like Randy’s got problems,” said Steve.

“Let’s have a look,” said Dud.

So coffee was left to get cold and the entire Supreme Court of All Things Mechanical – Steve, Dud, Doc, Herb and Dewey – trooped out to see what was going on.
